Volleyball earns automatic bid to NIVC
Nov. 22, 2017

FORT COLLINS, Colorado – Maryland Eastern Shore’s volleyball team garnered an automatic bid to the National Invitational Volleyball Championship on Tuesday (Nov. 21), earning their third trip to the postseason as a program, and the first since 2012.

An opponent will be announced Sunday (Nov. 26), after the NCAA Tournament makes its selections that evening.

The 2017 NIVC tournament returns from a hiatus in place since 1995, and will consist of 32 teams with participating schools hosting all matches. Teams are offered automatic berths by the NIVC when they are highest-finishing team in its conference regular-season standings, and are not selected for the NCAA Tournament.

The Hawks finished the season 27-8 before being ousted by Florida A&M in the MEAC semifinals. Howard won the title and based on a variety of factors should be the MEAC’s lone representative at NCAA’s.

“After a nearly 22-year hiatus, we are excited to announce the first 15 schools that have received and accepted an automatic berth into the 2017 event,” said NIVC director Sean Hardy. “We are still waiting on a few other AQ’s from several conferences, but we are excited to see the 32-team field getting closer and closer to reality.”

Originally known as the Women’s Invitational Volleyball Championship, the NIVC made its first run from 1989-1995, with Wisconsin winning the inaugural title.

Eight participating schools will host several opponents in Rounds 1 and 2 slated for Nov. 28-30.  Round 3 will take place Dec. 1-3, Semifinals (Dec. 4-9), and Championship on Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. ET, to be streamed live on ESPN3.
