PRINCESS ANNE, Md. –This past week was a very quiet week for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics program. There was just one team in action, but the program represented the school well, as the volleyball team won two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference road matches. The bowling team and men’s basketball teams were each scheduled for action, but the effects of Hurricane Sandy proved to be too much.

Let’s take a look at the action from this past week:

The volleyball team participated in two matches this past week.

The Hawks have now won 10 consecutive MEAC matches as the team defeated Morgan State, 3-1, on Friday before they posted a 3-0 victory at Coppin State on Sunday. The team has now won 22 consecutive MEAC regular-season matches.

In the Hawks’ win over Morgan State, three players notched double-digit kill totals. Sophomore Saitaua Iosia (Long Beach, Calif.) posted a game-high 19 kills, while senior Ndidi Ibe (North Richland Hills, Texas) had 12 kills and junior Maline Vaitai (Salt Lake City, Utah) had 11. Vaitai posted the lone double-double on the day as she chipped in with 10 digs as well. Sophomore Victoria Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) led the team with four blocks.

Williams had a team-high 13 kills in the 3-0 victory over CSU, while sophomore Jessie Vicic (Cambridge, Ontario) had 38 assists and Iosia had nine digs. Ibe provided a consistent line for UMES in the victory as she had nine kills, three digs and four blocks.

The Hawks are now one win or a Norfolk State loss away from being named the MEAC North Division regular season champions.

  • This week’s featured golfer in “60 Seconds on the Green” was junior Sedrick Bailey

  • This week’s featured student-athlete in UMES’ newest column, A Walk with a Hawk…, was junior golfer Mike Veverka

  • Ibe and Iosia were named the PRMC UMES Athletes of the Week this past week

  • The women’s basketball team was predicted to finish sixth in the MEAC Preseason Poll
