NORFOLK, Va. – The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its volleyball weekly honors and the University of Maryland Eastern Shores’ (UMES) freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) earned MEAC Rookie of the Week, the announcement came today. This is Rosales first-time receiving this award.

Last week, Rosales tallied 65 assists (9.29 assists/set), including back-to-back 30+ assist performances. Rosales also posted six digs and four kills against Morgan State and Coppin State.

Rosales is the second Hawk this season to receive MEAC honors as Junior Petra Jerabkova (Prague, Czech Republic) won this honor back on September 9th. With this award, Rosales is the last true freshman setter to win this regular-season award since Bella Jade Romero, dating back to November 16, 2009. This season, Rosales has competed in 77 sets and accumulated 480 assists, 110 digs, 47 kills, and 13 service aces.

Coppin State sophomore Denali Sturgeon was named MEAC Player of the Week as she guided the Eagles to its first winning season in MEAC Play (7-4). Other notable Hawk performance included Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) setting a new conference-high this season with 39 digs against Morgan State (10/31).

The Lady Hawks are scheduled to play their final two regular-season matches at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Thursday (11/7), UMES faces the Spartans of Norfolk State University. This Sunday (11/10), the Lady Hawks conclude the season against Hampton. Match times are 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
