PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team fell to Howard University, 3-1. The Lady Bison ended the nation’s longest home-match winning streak (31). In the process, Howard also snapped the Lady Hawks’ 35 regular-season home-match winning streak against conference opponents.

Sophomore Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) led the Lady Hawks with 20 kills. Smith is the first Hawk to post 20+ kills in a single-match this season. Freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) set a new career-high in assists (44), breaking her previous mark (38). This is Rosales second 30+ assist performance this season. Rosales is the last freshman to tally multiple 30+ assist outings in a single-season since Jessica Vicic (2011). Senior Jingqiao Li posted her fourth 20+ dig performance this season (21), tying for the most 20+ dig performances in a single-season with Rebecca Prado since 2008.

In the first set, Rosales would begin the match with the Lady Hawks’ lone ace taking a 1-0 lead. Howard would recover and take the lead, 9-7, forcing UMES to take a timeout. After the timeout, Smith would score on a kill with Li’s assist followed by a Lady Bison’s error to tie the score, 9-9. Both teams would nearly exchange points until Howard regained the lead, 16-13, making the Lady Hawks use another timeout. After the second timeout, UMES would score on an error, but the Lady Bison would close out the set on a 9-5 run, making the first set score 25-18.

In the second set, the Lady Hawks would respond. UMES would score the first two points in the set on a Howard error followed by a Lauren Berry (Bloomington, IL) kill, assisted by Rosales. The Lady Hawks would take a 9-5 lead in the second set, forcing the Lady Bison to use their first timeout of the match. Following the timeout, Howard would tie the set, 17-17, but the Lady Bison would make two consecutive errors followed by a kill from Berry to extend UMES’ lead, 20-17. Howard would take another timeout in the set to stop UMES’ momentum, but the Lady Hawks would not be denied, scoring five of the last nine points in the set to win, 25-21.



In the third set, the Lady Hawks would score the first point of the set on an error. Both teams would exchange the first eight points of the set, making the score 4-4. The Lady Bison began to create separation afterwards scoring the next six out of eight points to take a 10-6 lead. UMES would continue to fight back, being as close as four points at the 21-17 mark. The Lady Bison would score the last four points in the sets to take the third set, 25-17.

In the fourth set, UMES would score first on an Ashley Smith’s kill. The two teams would be deadlock, 8-8, until Howard would score the next five out of six points in the set, making the score 13-9. The Lady Hawks would call a timeout. After the timeout, both teams would exchange the next five points, making the score 17-11. The Lady Hawks would battle back to cut into the lead being down by two points on three separate occasions, but the Lady Bison would win the match, 25-22.

Other notable Hawk performances includes Berry’s 14 kills along with one dig and a .370 hitting percentage. Precious Manu (Carson, CA) had eight digs, one assist, and one kill. Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI) added six kills and two digs.

For the Lady Bison, three players ended with 11 kills each. Stephanie Shultis led the team with 41 assists while Allyson Lods had 14 digs in the match.

On Sunday (Oct. 6th), the Lady Hawks begin a six-match road trip in Baltimore, MD against Coppin State University. Match time is 3:00 p.m.
