PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team looks to continue their momentum Friday night against the Lady Bison of Howard University at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. Match time is 7:00 p.m.


UMES defeated Delaware State University (DSU), 3-1. The team continued their dominance at home by winning their 31st consecutive match, which is the nation’s longest home-match winning streak. In the process, the Lady Hawks also picked up their 35th consecutive regular-season home-match victory against conference opponents, dating back to 2006.


Sophomore Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) tied a season-high 12 kills in the victory over the Hornets. Currently, Smith leads the team in kills (85). Freshman Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI) is second on the team in kills (66) including 10 kills versus DSU. Lauren Berry (Bloomington, IL) and Moriah Brookins (Cypress, CA) each had double-digit kills. Berry had 11 kills while Brookins added 10 kills.

Newcomer Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) earned a double-double in the win with 38 assists and 10 digs. Rosales is the third UMES freshman to record 30-plus assists in a regular-season single match since 2008, joining Jessica Vicic (2011) and Bella Jade Romero (2009).

Defensively, Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) led the Lady Hawks with 23 digs in last Friday’s victory. Li also leads the team in the category with 190 digs this season. Li had her third 20-plus dig performance of the season. Currently, Li has the second-most 20-plus dig performances since 2008 behind Rebecca Prado (4).



Freshman Allison Woods (Magnolia, TX) is second on the team with 71 digs including 14 digs in the win over the Hornets.


The Lady Hawks enters Friday night’s contest 2-11 overall (1-0 MEAC) while the Lady Bison have accumulated a 12-5 overall record (1-0 MEAC) including last Monday’s win over Delaware State, 3-1. Since 2002, UMES leads the series, 22-3, including winning the last four contests. The last home loss to Howard was November 7, 2010.

In the conference, both teams top the digs per set category. Currently, Howard and UMES are first and second, respectively. The Lady Bison averages 13.83 digs per set while the Lady Hawks average 13.63. UMES’ Li and Howard’s Allyson Lods are the two team’s top diggers. Lods is second in the conference with 4.45 digs per set while Li is right behind her with 4.42, placing her third in the conference.

These two teams are scheduled to play again on Friday, October 25th in our Nation’s Capital, Washington, DC. Match time is 7:00 p.m.


After Friday’s match, the team begins a six-match road trip beginning in Baltimore, MD against Coppin State University. The six-match road trip concludes in a re-match against Howard.
