Hawk Talk: A Weekly Recap of Shore Athletics (August 22 – 28)

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – This week’s Hawk Talk edition features news from volleyball’s weekend opener in Montgomery, Ala.

On Aug. 26-27, the volleyball team went a perfect 4-0 at the ISTAP Collegiate Cup in Montgomery, Ala.

Last Friday (Aug. 26), Maryland Eastern Shore opened the season winning in straight sets over Alabama A&M (25-15, 25-15, 25-15). Junior Alana Polk (Houston) convert eight kills on eight attempts in the victory.

Later that night, the Hawks knocked off Alabama State in straight sets (25-23, 25-15, 27-25). Sophomore Rachel Kayongo (Northridge, Calif.) recorded her first collegiate double-double in the win.

The next day (Aug. 27), the club rallied to defeat Texas Southern in four sets (23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23). Sophomore Zuzana Ondruskova (Bilovec, Czech Republic) led the way on the defensive end with 15 digs while adding a team-high three aces.

On the same night, the squad wrapped up the weekend with another victory in straight sets against Jackson State (25-19, 25-18, 25-14). Junior Kirstin Fink (Tucson, Ariz.) provided steady hands at setter with 30 assists.

On Sept. 1-4, the Hawks return home to host The Shore Courtyard Classic, presented by Courtyard by Marriott. The tournament's opening match features Maryland Eastern Shore and the American Eagles at 7 p.m. inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center.
