MORGANTOWN, West Virginia – Maryland Eastern Shore’s volleyball season came to a close Tuesday evening (Nov. 28) in the opening round of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) with a 3-0 loss (18-25, 18-25, 14-25) at the hands of the West Virginia Mountaineers.

The Shore (27-9) battled valiantly, hitting .169 against a tough defensive team while besting the Mountaineers in blocks, six to zero. West Virginia (19-12) amassed a .379 hitting percentage, second only to Wake Forest against the Hawks this season.

Junior Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) led the way for The Shore with nine kills and six digs, along with a .318 hitting percentage. Other top performers included 12 assists from junior Carolina Machado (São Paulo, Brazil), 10 digs from freshman Eva Valentova (Ceske, Czech Republic), and nine digs with a pair of kills from junior Rachel Kayongo (Northridge, California).

In their final matches as Hawks, graduate student Mere Serea (Suva, Fiji) led the team with three block participations, senior Alana Polk (Houston, Texas) hit .500 with three kills and senior Kirstin Fink (Tucson, Arizona) went 2-for-4 with a block assist.

The Hawks battled with the Mountaineers in the first set, matching them point-for-point towards an 11-11 tie. But West Virginia built a small lead, and then secured a 1-0 lead by scoring on seven of the last ten volleys.

The Mountaineers blasted to a 10-2 advantage in the second frame, and although The Shore battled back with a couple of runs, including a 5-0 span involving a Babic kick save, they were unable to overcome the deficit.

Hopes for a comeback were dashed by another West Virginia charge early in the third set. The Mountaineers jumped out to a 5-2 lead and rode the momentum to take the match in a sweep.

Maryland Eastern Shore ends the campaign with the second-most wins in program history and the team’s third postseason berth. The quest for a MEAC title and another trip to the postseason resumes August 2018.
