Babic’s big day helps Hawks sweep Spartans

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland – Junior Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) led the charge for the Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball team, registering 15 kills in 17 attempts as the Hawks swept Norfolk State 3-0 (25-17, 25-10, 25-12) Friday evening (Nov. 10) in Virginia.

Babic’s efficiency ranks among the best in The Shore’s volleyball history. Her hitting percentage of .882 is the highest for a Hawk with over ten kills in a match for over a decade, and the best since Samantha Chukwura hit .778 on November 16, 2008. The junior also tied for a match-high seven digs and added two block assists.

Maryland Eastern Shore (25-7, 11-0 MEAC) also received fine performances from junior Carolina Machado (São Paulo, Brazil) who had 24 asssists, junior Maja Jankovic (Ruma, Serbia) with seven digs, graduate student Mere Serea (Suva, Fiji and her five kills with a .444 hitting percentage, and senior Alana Polk (Houston, Texas) with four kills and two block assists.



Norfolk State (3-22, 0-11 MEAC) saw a match-high three blocks with two solos from Jannel Ezeagwu.

The first set was the one game that played close. Both teams traded small advantages, building towards a 19-17 lead for the Hawks. Polk then delivered a kill and an ace, kicking off a 6-0 run to win 25-17.

Eastern Shore dominated sets two and three, generating double digit leads while holding the Spartans to eight kills for the remainder of the match. Norfolk State finished with a negative hitting percentage, becoming the third Hawk opponent to commit more errors than kills.

The Hawks close out the regular season at 3 p.m. Sunday as they take on Delaware State in Dover.
