Princess Anne, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team were defeated, 3-1, by the Spartans of Norfolk State University at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 3-20 overall (2-9 MEAC) whereas the Spartans improved to 10-17 (6-5 MEAC).

Three UMES players had a team-high seven kills: Lauren Berry (Bloomington, IL); Haley Robinson (Honolulu, HI); and Allison Woods (Magnolia, TX). Freshman Precious Manu (Carson, CA) pave the way for the Lady Hawks with 19 helpers after fellow freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) went down due to an injury midway through the second set. Rosales finished her night with 11 assists. Two UMES players posted double-digit digs, led by Senior Jingiao Li (Beijing, China) with 14 digs. Aleksandra Manolova (Sofia, Bulgaria) also had 10 digs in the loss.

In the first set, the Lady Hawks would get on the board first after an error by the Spartans, 1-0. Then, both teams would be deadlocked, 9-9, after the next 17 points. UMES Volleyball Head Coach Millicent Van Norden would request a timeout after seeing the Spartans gain momentum. After the brief intermission, Norfolk State would score the following three points, 12-9, until a kill by Diara Lewis (Columbia, SC) would stop the run, 12-10. Next, the Spartans would score the next 13 out of 19 points to win the set, 25-16, and take a lead in the match, 1-0.

In set number two, UMES would again score the first point on Woods’ kill, 1-0. Norfolk State responded by going on a 10-5 run and took a 10-6 lead, forcing the Lady Hawks to call a timeout. After the break, the Spartans’ run continued after scoring the next two points, 12-6, until another Woods’ kill would stop the momentum. Next, Norfolk State would grow their lead as much as eight points after scoring the following eight out of 14 points, 20-12. Despite being down a huge deficit late, the young Lady Hawks refused to give up as the crowd would rally behind the team. UMES would cut into the Spartans’ lead by going on a 4-1 run, 21-16, forcing Norfolk State to use their first timeout of the match. After the Spartans’ timeout, the Lady Hawks’ run continued as they scored four straight points, 21-20, including three Norfolk State errors and Manolova’s service ace. The Spartans would ask for another timeout to stop UMES’ run. After the short timeout, Norfolk State scored back-to-back points to extend their lead back to three, 23-20, forcing Coach Van Norden to ask for a timeout. After the Lady Hawks’ timeout, both teams exchanged the next two points and the Spartans would have set-point, 24-21. As UMES was on the verge of facing a 2-0 match deficit, the team never stopped believing as they would score five consecutive points to win the set, 26-24, including a Robinson kill to clinch the set. With the win, both teams were tied, 1-1.

After the ten-minute intermission, the Spartans jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, forcing UMES to use an early timeout. After the short rest, the Lady Hawks battled their way back into the set as they score the following seven out of 11 points, 10-8, but the Spartans would regain momentum. Norfolk State scored six straight points to extend their lead, 16-8. The Lady Hawks continued to fight, but the deficit was too great to overcome as they would fall, 25-12. As a result, the Spartans would take a 2-1 match lead.

In the fourth set, Norfolk State scored the first two points until a kill by Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL) would put the Lady Hawks on the board, 2-1. The Spartans would score the next four out of five points, 6-2, making UMES utilize another early timeout. After the Lady Hawks’ timeout, Manolova’s kill cuts Norfolk State’s lead down to three, 6-3. Then, both teams exchanged the next eight points, 10-7. Next, the Spartans would widen their lead by scoring the following five out of eight points, 15-10. Norfolk State would continue their momentum late in the set as they took a 20-12 lead. The Lady Hawks continued to battle as they fought off multiple match points, but the Spartans would eventually take the set, 25-16, and match, 3-1.

Other notable Hawk performances included Lewis tallying five kills and two digs while Smith recorded five kills, four digs, and a block.

For Norfolk State, two Spartans registered double-digit kills, led by Goda Jankauskaite (17). Darcy Moore paced all setters with a match-high 43 assists and two Norfolk State players had double-figured digs, including 18 from Noelle Eagles.

On Sunday (11/10), the Lady Hawks will play their final match of the 2013 season as they host the Lady Pirates of Hampton University. Additionally, Li will be honored prior to the match as this season’s lone senior. Match time is 3:00 p.m.
