Princess Anne, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) volleyball team lost in straight sets, 3-0, to Coppin State University at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center this afternoon. As a result, the Lady Hawks dropped to 3-19 overall (2-8 MEAC) while the Eagles improved to 11-15 (7-4 MEAC). With the loss, UMES has been eliminated from Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) postseason play.

Sophomore Diara Lewis (Columbia, SC) was the lone Hawk to post double-digit kills (10). Lewis also tallied six digs while producing a .296 hitting percentage. Freshman Sonia Rosales (Victorville, CA) recorded her second consecutive 30+ assist performance (30), eighth overall this season. Senior Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) registered a team-high 13 digs in a losing effort.

In the first set, UMES scored the first point of the match on an Eagles’ error, 1-0, but Coppin State would rebound by scoring the next seven points, 7-1. Both teams would exchange the following eight points and the Eagles would take a comfortable lead, 11-5. UMES Volleyball Head Coach Millicent Van Norden would request a timeout to regroup her young squad. After the Lady Hawks’ timeout, UMES would make a run. The Lady Hawks scored the next three points on kills by Lewis, Aleksandra Manolova (Sofia, Bulgaria), and Lauren Berry (Bloomington, IL), 11-8. Coppin State would regain momentum and score the following 14 out of 22 points to take the set, 25-16, and lead the match, 1-0.

In set number two, the Lady Hawks would jump out to an early 6-2 lead, forcing the Eagles to take their first timeout of the match. After Coppin State’s timeout, the Eagles would make a run and score the next three points, 6-5. UMES would withstand Coppin State’s mini-run and extended their lead by scoring the next 10 out of 15 points, 16-10, midway through the set. Then, the Lady Hawks would increase the lead and score the following seven out of 12 points, 23-15. The Eagles would take another timeout to slow down UMES’ momentum. After the short intermission, Coppin State would make a charge and cut into the Lady Hawks’ lead, 24-19, forcing Coach Van Norden to use a timeout. After the brief timeout, the Eagles’ run continued and they would complete the comeback by scoring the final seven points in the set, 26-24, and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, Coppin State would take an early 4-1 lead, forcing UMES to take a quick timeout. After UMES’ timeout, the Eagles’ momentum continued by scoring the next three points, 7-1, until a Lewis’ kill and a Coppin State’s error would slow down the run, 7-3. The Lady Hawks would make a run of their own as they scored six out of the next eight points, 9-7, including a kill by Ashley Smith (Huntley, IL). The Eagles asked for a timeout to talk things over. After the Eagles’ timeout, Coppin State would regain control and score six straight points to take a 15-7 lead. UMES would score three more points before the Eagles ended the match on a 10-3 run. Coppin State won the set, 25-11, and match, 3-0.

Other notable Hawk performances included Manolova recording five digs and two kills while Berry added six kills, two digs, and a block. Smith tallied eight kills, an assist, and a .217 hitting percentage in the loss.

For the Eagles, Denali Sturgeon led Coppin State with 16 kills and eight digs. Chelsee Sauni had a match-high 47 assists whereas two Eagles posted double-digit digs, led by Gabrielle Otero (17).

The Lady Hawks are scheduled to play their final two regular-season matches at the Hytche Athletic Center. Thursday (11/7), UMES faces the Spartans of Norfolk State University. Next Sunday (11/10), the Lady Hawks conclude the season against Hampton. Match times are 7:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
