Princess Anne, Md. – In the night where the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Hawks had an opportunity to move up the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division standings, the squad fell short to Morgan State in four sets, 3-1. As a result, the clubs split the season series with road victories.

With the setback, UMES dropped to 17-6 (5-3 MEAC) overall while the Bears moved to 10-13 (7-2 MEAC).

Senior Petra Jerabkova (Prague, Czech Republic) recorded a double-double, posting 26 dimes and 13 digs. Offensively, sophomore Kirstin Fink (Tucson, Ariz.) tallied a team-high nine kills whereas fellow classmate Alana Polk (Houston) and freshman Zuzana Ondruskova (Bilovec, Czech Republic) added eight kills each in a losing effort.

The first set saw five ties and five lead changes between UMES and Morgan State. A kill from the Bears’ Dinah Jones tied the set, 18-18, and Morgan State never looked back. Morgan State closed out the set on a 7-3 run and held the early advantage in the match, 1-0.

In set two, the Hawks found themselves in a familiar situation as they were deadlocked, 7-7. Back-to-back Bear errors gave UMES cushion as they began to get into a rhythm. With a 9-7 lead, the Hawks scored nine of the next 15 points and forced Morgan State into a timeout, 18-13. After the brief intermission, the Bears capitalized on multiple Hawk errors and got back into the set. Maryland Eastern Shore showed resilience and fought off the Bears’ rally as they took the second set, 25-19, and tied the match, 1-1.

After the 10-minute intermission, Morgan State jumped out to an early lead, 9-6. Morgan State’s Haley McClure delivered a kill and gave the Bears a 13-7 advantage. UMES stormed back and went on a 6-1 run, capped off by an ace from Haley Robinson (Honolulu, Hawaii). After the Bears’ timeout, Morgan State regained the momentum and went on a mini-run and forced Maryland Eastern Shore into a timeout. UMES continued to battle, but the Bears took the third set, 25-21, and reclaimed the lead in the match, 2-1.

The fourth set was tied, 8-8, until Morgan State took advantage of more Hawk errors. After trailing 12-9, Maryland Eastern Shore found some momentum and capitalized on the Bears’ miscues as they trimmed the deficit down to the slimmest of margins, 15-14. Unfortunately, this would be as close as the squad would get as Morgan State took the fourth set, 25-22, and won the match, 3-1.

Evely Macedo led the way for the Bears as she recorded a double-double with a match-high 18 kills and 11 digs. Carmen Fernandez also registered a double-double, posting 44 assists and 11 digs in the victory.

On Nov. 1, the Hawks return to the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center as they will face another in-state rival Coppin State. First-serve is 3 p.m.
