WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's volleyball team has been rolling through competition at the Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) Lady Rams Invitational. Finishing all their matches thus far in under an hour, they defeated Savannah State University (SSU) for the second time 3-0 (25-12, 25-9, 25-13).

The entire team saw playing time in the 46 minute match. Thonya Joseph (Bridgetown, Barbados/Clarendon JC) and Whitney Johnson (Prince Frederick, Md./Albany) led the Lady Hawks attack with a game-high 11 kills each. Christina Estebané (El Paso, Texas/Midland College) and Samantha Pimental (Corvallis, Ore./Corvallis) shared the setter responsibilities. Pimental finished with a game-high 19 assists and Estebané had 16 respectively.

Chanita Wesley (Minneapolis, Minn./Breck) had a team high six digs and Estebané continued her serving dominance with a match high four service aces, three of which came in UMES' first seven points of the match.

The Lady Hawks started the third set on a 10-2 rally. SSU fought to stay in the match and battled to within six points on a kill by Brittany Lewis. But UMES never let them close the margin ending the match with an 8-2 run.

Lewis led the Lady Tigers with five kills. April Hayes finished with a team high eight assists and Shawannda McClain had a match high eight digs.

UMES is now 11-6 and will face host WSSU in the Championship game at 1 p.m. The Lady Hawks have a chance to sweep the tournament before travelling to North Carolina Central University tomorrow.
