BUFFALO, N.Y. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) young squad was outmatched by the No. 13 ranked Buckeyes of Ohio State University (OSU) as the Hawks fell 3-0 (25-6, 25-10, 25-9) and could not muster much offense on one of the nation's top teams.

OSU looked like a top-ranked team, hitting almost .500 (.485), posting 38 kills on 66 swings with just six errors. They served up eight aces and missed just four serves. In all the Buckeyes made just 13 errors, about half of the Hawks' points.

UMES got solid defense again from Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) who showed some senior leadership, leading the team with six digs. Newcomer Precious Manu (Carson, Calif.) held her own, collecting five digs to keep OSU at bay on occasion.

Petra Jerabkova (Prague, Czech Republic) did what she could, getting three kills, seven assists and three digs. UMES got three blocks on the day, including a solo and an assist from Moriah Brookins (Cypress, Calif.) while Lauren Berry (Bloomington, Ill.) had two block assists to go along with a pair of kills.

UMES hit -.171 as a team to the stout OSU defense and no Hawk hit for a positive percentage. The Buckeyes blocked seven balls, dug 38 and dished out the same amount in assists and kills.

The Hawks closest set came in the second when they opened with the lead, getting a Berry kill on an Jerabkova assist. They traded points to go back up 2-1 on a Haley Robinson (Honolulu, Hawaii) kill, one of three in the match for her. She would rotate back to serve an ace for a 3-1 lead, but on the following serve OSU answered with a kill and then served up four straight points to take a 6-3 lead and force a Hawk timeout.

The break didn't break the Buckeye momentum as they returned to serve up three more points before a hands call broke the serve to give UMES the side out. It didn't last long as OSU got another kill before Ashley Smith (Huntley, Ill.) responded with her own for the Hawks to cut the lead to 11-5. They lost the serve again though on another OSU kill and then two Hawk errors put the Buckeyes up 13-5 and UMES used their final timeout.

OSU then rolled outscoring the Hawks 12-5 the rest of the way to take the 25-10 win.

UMES lost the third set 25-9 and fell in the match 3-0 to fall to 1-9 on the season. They will regroup tomorrow and take on the host Buffalo and Valparaiso.
