PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland — Maryland Eastern Shore took second place at The Henson’s Hawk Invite, after a valiant effort came up agonizingly short in a 3-2 loss (25-13,17-25,23-25,25-19,14-16) to the Campbell Fighting Camels at the William P. Hytche Athletic Center on Saturday.

The Hawks went 3-1 on the weekend to improve their overall record to 10-4 on the season.

Juniors Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) and Rachel Kayongo (Northridge, California), along with sophomore Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro) earned All-Tournament honors for the Hawks.

Vujosevic led the Hawks with 14 kills in the Campbell match, with Babic right behind her at 13. Graduate student Mere Serea (Suva, Fiji) added six blocks (one solo), while Babic earned five. Sophomore Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) added 27 assists and four aces while junior Maja Jankovic (Ruma, Serbia) secured 15 digs.

Maryland Eastern Shore easily took the first set by twelve, then fell behind to Campbell early to drop the second set. In the pivotal third set, the Hawks overcame an early deficit to pull close, but they ultimately never took the lead, falling one point short at times before Campbell won the set, 25-23.

The Hawks would rally to force a fifth set, holding the upper hand early in the fourth set and never letting go, using a Kayongo kill to seal a 25-19 set win.

In the fifth and final set the Fighting Camels stormed out to an early lead at 5-2, but the Hawks soared back with a 5-0 run, benefiting off several attack errors. The Shore held at 8-5 lead at the side change, but a determined Campbell squad fought back, leveling the score at 11. The visitors from North Carolina then fought off a Hawk comeback to claim their third straight victory over Maryland Eastern Shore with a 16-14 win in set five.

Campbell won its second tournament in Princess Anne, after winning The Best Western Wild Weekend in September 2014.

The Shore will look to return to their winning ways with a non-conference match at George Washington on Tuesday evening. The Hawks will be looking to avenge a loss to the Colonials at the Cougar Challenge in Pullman, Washington last season.
