Hawks rebound with early Saturday victory against Bulldogs

PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland -

The Maryland Eastern Shore volleyball squad made the best of an early start to play Saturday morning (Sept. 3) in the Courtyard Classic with a straight sets victory against South Carolina State (25-11, 25-14, 25-11).

The Hawks improve to 5-2, while South Carolina State falls to 0-8 to start the year.

The Shore got off to a strong start scoring six straight points in the first set to take a 7-2 lead, After the Bulldogs cut the lead to 8-6 used a 12-3 run to take control again. The second and third sets provided much the same result.

Lucia Babic, a senior from Sisak Croatia, had a big day for Eastern Shore leading the way with 11 kills on 18 attacks (50 percent).

Mere Serea (Suva, Fiji) and sophomore Marta Klafuric put up near identical lines on the attack converting eight kills against one error on 13 chances each (53 percent). Serea added a pair of blocks and Klafuric had one.

Freshman Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) led with 34 assists and converted all five of her attacks, while Sophomore Zuzana Ondruskova (Bilovec, Czech Republic) had 10 digs.

The Hawks dominated the match from the attack (45 percent), while holding the bulldogs to a .000 percentage Eastern Shore held a 45-16 edge in kills.


 

 

The Shore will face Rider at 7 p.m. in the day's final game of the Classic and will host Norfolk State on Sunday (Sept. 4) at 2 p.m.
