PEORIA, Ill. - The season opener didn't go as hoped for the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) as they dropped a 3-0 decision to the University of Tennessee-Martin in the Renaissance Coliseum on the campus of Bradley University.

The Hawks got a team-high nine digs from lone returner Jingqiao Li (Beijing, China) but the UT-Martin offense found other openings, hitting .382 for the match and tallying 44 team kills. Lynsey Hazelwood led the Skyhawks with a match-high 10 kills.

UMES was led by sophomore transfer Ashley Smith (Huntley, Ill.) who knocked down nine balls for kills and hit a team high .261. Diara Lewis (Columbia, S.C.), another sophomore transfer, added seven kills but had 25 swings and committed four errors. The Hawks hit just .108 for the match as two Skyhawks had double-digit digs with Chelsea Bowles getting 17 and Emily Keaton getting 10.

The Hawks had their best outing in the third set, battling back and forth but taking a 12-9 lead, their largest, when Smith took a Sonia Rosales (Victorville, Calif.) set to notch a kill. Rosales would finish the match with 17 assists. Tennessee-Martin would battle back though and take a 13-12 lead, rattling off four straight points. UMES then tied the match at 13 as Hazelwood committed an error.

Allison Woods (Magnolia, Texas) gave UMES the lead right back with a service ace but once again UT-Martin would take the lead right back again as Woods committed a service error and Hazelwood notched another kill. Smith answered her with a kill of her own to tie the set at 15. The back and forth continued and the Hawks' Lauren Berry (Bloomington, Ill.) pounded out one of her two kills to tie it again at 19. The Skyhawks then rattled off four points to take a commanding 23-19 lead. UMES wouldn't give up, getting a kill from Moriah Brookins (Cypress, Calif.), her third of the match, to make it 20-23 but back-to-back kills from Amanda Crask and Hazelwood gave UT-Martin the 25-20 set win and 3-0 match win.

In set one the Hawks fell behind 2-0 quickly on back-to-back Keaton aces. The hole set the tempo for the set as the Hawks never gained a lead and only had one tie. The 8-8 draw came on a Lewis kill for UMES but UT-Martin answered with three straight points. The set would end 25-17.

The second set was more of the same. The Hawks started with the lead, 1-0 as Hazelwood committed an error, but from there the Skyhawks controlled the match, getting multiple service opportunities in a row as Bowles would have two stints of serving three and four times in a row before Hazelwood closed the match serving five straight points for the 25-10 win.

UMES will regroup to take on the host Bradley Braves at 1:30 p.m. and Western Illinois at 6:00 p.m., both tomorrow, August 31st.
