Gut wrenching five setter goes against Hawks
Rachel Kayongo tallied 15 kills and fell one dig shy of a double-double, but the Hawks dropped the match in extra time during the fifth set

ANNAPOLIS, Maryland — In the concluding match of the Kristen Dickmann Invitational, both the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks and Navy Midshipmen gave everything they had in what amounted to the tournament’s title match. Navy ultimately won the match in a gut wrenching five set affair (18-25, 25-22, 25-20, 20-25, 16-18) at Alumni Hall in Annapolis.

Three Hawks reached double figures in kills. Sophomore Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro) led the match with 21 kills and added 10 digs for her second straight double-double. Junior Rachel Kayongo (Northridge, California) totaled 15 kills and a block assist, while junior Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) matched Kayongo’s 15 with nine digs to just fell shy of a double-double.

Graduate student Mere Serea (Suva, Fiji) continued her average of more than one block per set, with seven over the five sets. Sophomore Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) averaged just under 11 assists per set, and junior libero Maja Jankovic (Ruma, Serbia) averaged more than four digs a set with a grand total of 22.

Babic and Vujosevic were named to the Kristen Dickmann All-Tournament Team. By virtues of sets won (five to three), Maryland Eastern Shore placed second in the tournament, ahead of Saint Francis and Akron.

Maryland Eastern Shore travels to Brooklyn next weekend for the St. Francis Brooklyn Terrier Invitational. Along with the Terriers, the Hawks will face NJIT, UMass Lowell, and Saint Peter’s.
