ANNAPOLIS, Maryland — The Hawks started the 2017 season on the right track in Annapolis Friday, sweeping Saint Francis in a 3-0 win (25-22, 25-22, 25-19) to secure the team’s third straight opening match triumph.

Victory was achieved in a total team effort. The Shore tallied 43 kills and a .299 hitting percentage, with junior Rachel Kayongo (Northridge, California) and junior Iva Vujosevic (Bar, Montenegro) leading the way, posting nine kills each. Sophomore setter Ivana Blazevic (Zagreb, Croatia) averaged 12 assists per set while junior Koya Sowells (Missouri City, Texas) registered 14 digs. Graduate student Mere Serea (Suva, Fiji) was strong on the block with four for the match.

The positive outcome did not come without trials, however. In sets one and two, the Red Flash jumped out to early leads. Maryland Eastern Shore rallied from a 7-5 deficit with a spectacular 13-2 run, before fending off a Saint Francis rally to take the first set by three. A back-and-forth second set saw The Shore grab the lead in the halfway mark, holding a 21-15 edge. But the Red Flash secured a 4-0 run to force a Hawks timeout. Kills by junior Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) and Vujosevic stymied the rally, helping the Hawks capture the set by a 25-22 score.

Both teams would battle hard in the third set, but The Shore ultimately captured the set and match with a 4-0 run to make the score 23-17. Kills by Vujosevic and Serea, along with an ace from senior Kirstin Fink (Tucson, Arizona) made the difference as the Hawks won by six points in the final set.

One newcomer to the Hawks’ squad—junior Maja Jankovic (Ruma, Serbia)—made her Eastern Shore debut, earning four digs and an assist in the match.

Maryland Eastern Shore finishes their stay in Annapolis with two matches, facing Akron at 1 p.m. followed by a meeting with the host Navy at 6:30 in the evening.
