HAWK TALK: A WEEKLY RECAP OF UMES ATHLETICS
April 30, 2012
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - This past week for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics program saw the outdoor track teams highlight play, as several big finishes were seen at the Penn Relays. The success of the track and field teams were unable to be duplicated by the baseball and softball teams, as the two combined to go 0-6 last week.
Let's take a look at action from this past week:
The baseball team went 0-2 last week.
The team began the week with a 9-6 loss to George Washington University in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday. The Hawks were in the contest early, as the men were only behind 2-1 after two innings of play. George Washington dropped a five spot in the third to run away with a lead that it would never relinquish.
Sophomore Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) and junior Tre-von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) each had three hits, while three others had two hits. Freshman Alex Welch (Baltimore, Md.) threw just under five innings of three-hit ball to lead UMES on the hill.
In the opener at Longwood, UMES fell behind early and was unable to overcome the deficit. Longwood jumped out to a two-run lead after two and a six-run lead after six. Sophomore Stephen Bull (Millsboro, Del.) collected the only RBI for the Hawks on the day. UMES lost the contest, 7-1.
UMES' other two games against Longwood were cancelled.
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore outdoor track teams saw several impressive finishes at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa., this past week.
The team saw sophomore Owen Cain (Montgomery Village, Md.) claim first-place in the triple jump after he posted a 15.08m jump. The Hawks also saw the 4x100m relay team post top honors when junior Nyls Nubret (St. Francois, Guadeloupe), junior Andre Walsh (St. Catherine, Jamaica), senior Damien Miles (Teaneck, N.J.) and sophomore Marcus Wallace (Abington, Pa.) teamed up to win the event with a 40.96 finish in the IC4A race.
Senior Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) placed third in the women's shot put when she heaved the ball a distance of 15.95m (52-4). Her finish was bested by just .04m by the second-place finisher and .08m by the winner. Her event, which concluded on Thursday, saw competitors from the Big-10, SEC and Mountain West.
The team also saw the 4x400 team of junior Emilie Ducados (Paris, France), junior Lenora Guion-Firmin (Martinique, France), sophomore Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France) place third with a time of 57.8 in the ECAC race.
Henry and Cain's efforts this week helped them in being distinguished as the men's and women's recipients of this week's PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week. The article can be found here.
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore bowling team finished as the No. 1 team in the country in National Tenpins Coaching Association poll. The women had 593 points and 19 first-place votes.
The team also had the opportunity to bowl out the first pitch at Saturday night's Delmarva Shorebirds baseball game.
The UMES softball team went 0-4 this past week.
UMES began the week with an 11-0 loss at Hampton University on Tuesday. The loss at Hampton was the third for the Hawks against the Pirates in four days.
