MURFREESBORO, N.C. – Despite strong performances by sophomore Arshelle Jackson and junior Malcolm Johnson, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore tennis teams dropped 8-0 decisions to Chowan (N.C.) University on Tuesday afternoon. The match saw junior Raveena Sharma pick up her first collegiate tennis point at No. 3 doubles.

The men’s team (0-10) saw Johnson post three points in his first game at No. 1 singles, but the sophomore would fall in two sets, 6-3, 6-0. Sophomore Livin Costica picked up one point at No. 2 singles, before the men were swept the rest of the way.

UMES lost 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Christopher Charles and freshman George Justice dropped an 8-1 decision in third-doubles.

Senior Solana McMillan opened up play for the women’s team (0-9) with two points at No. 1 singles. McMillan fell to Natalya Kamenshchikova, 6-2, 6-0.

After junior Shamara McKenzie lost at No. 2 singles, Jackson was nipped at No. 3 by a score of 6-1, 6-4. Junior Alisia Belt and senior Anna Katenta each posted single points to conclude singles play.

The Hawks saw two solid performances in doubles play, as Belt and Jackson picked up one point at second-doubles. In No. 3 doubles, Katenta and Sharma lost 8-1.



The teams look to pick up their first wins of the season when they travel to Emmitsburg, Md., to square off with Mount St. Mary’s (Md.) University on Wednesday, March 21 at 3 p.m.
