The Lady Hawks fell 3-1 against the Terriers on Saturday

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Freshman Reine Fowajuh (Wilmington, Del.) won at No. 1 singles in her home debut, but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore tennis teams were swept by St. Francis (N.Y.). The men’s tennis team was defeated, 5-0, by the Terriers and the women fell by a score of 3-1. The match marked the first collegiate home contest for new Head Coach Benjamin Woods.

The men’s team (0-2) tallied one point in their match against SFC. At No. 1 singles, junior Wirlen Elame (Silver Spring, Md.) lost by a decision of 6-0, 6-1. His performance was followed by six consecutive 6-0 decisions in favor of St. Francis, as junior Kijontray McClay (San Diego, Calif.), sophomore Christopher Charles (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Joseph Journey were all swept in singles play. McClay and Charles teamed up to lose 6-0, 6-1 at top doubles.

The women’s team (0-1) opened up their year with a 3-1 loss to the Terriers. Fowajuh won at top singles by a score of 6-1, 1-6, 10-4 to mark the first win of the year for UMES tennis. Senior Valentina Collazos (Cali, Colombia) lost 6-2, 6-0 at No.2 singles, before UMES fell by a score of 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Fowajuh and Collazos played together at No.1 doubles, where the pair was defeated 8-0.

UMES returns to action tomorrow when the women’s team travels to Washington, D.C., to play George Washington at 12 p.m. The men’s team will resume play next Saturday, March 9, with a contest at North Carolina Central at 2:30 p.m.
