Final Stats

LEWES, Del. – After a tough season opener, Coach Walter Woods and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women’s Tennis team were unable to rebound as they were defeated twice against Delaware State (DSU).

DSU (4-0, 2-0 MEAC) won the first match, 4-0, which counted towards league play. The Shore could not get on the board in the nightcap, falling 9-0.

In match one, senior Melequa King (Washington, D.C.) served as the team’s No. 1 and scored three points before falling in straight sets against Milan Graves (6-2, 6-1).

Junior Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) also registered a point; however, DSU’s Sofia Rachi was too much as she defeated Brown in two sets (6-1, 6-0).

In doubles play, King and junior DaTonya Price (Baltimore) tallied a point, but Delaware State’s Graves and Leza Bessonova took the match, 6-1.

In match two, King, Brown, and Price earned a point, but lost by the same score 8-1.

Newcomer Jayla Gilliam (Richmond, Va.) produced three points before falling to DSU’s Miranda Malagari, 6-3.

On March 3-4, The Shore returns to action for a pair of contests.

Maryland Eastern Shore hosts Penn State-Abington in their home opener (March 3). First-serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.

The following day (March 4), Eastern Shore meets in-state rival Coppin State in league play. Match-time is slated for 10 a.m.
