PRINCESS ANNE, Md.  - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team is thrilled to announce that it has inked Alexis Hudson during the early signing period. Hudson will join the Hawks' 2013-14 team, as she recently signed her National Letter of Intent (NLI) with UMES.

"She is a great outfielder," said head coach Sam Douglas. "She is going to be a tremendous asset defensively. She is one of the fastest outfielders that I have seen in a while. I was impressed with the way she tracks the ball and how much ground she can cover. We are excited to bring her on board."

The Laurel, Del., product will bring a large amount of success to Hawk Field. She won the 2011 Senior League Softball Word Championship with Laurel and has been a big part of the Laurel High School softball team the past three years. She has also played seven seasons with the Diamond State Swoop.

As a junior, Hudson hit .389 and hit safely in 44-of-65 plate appearances for Laurel. She hit four doubles and two triples to compliment 10 stolen bases and 33 runs. She also hit one homerun and had eight walks for the Bulldogs, while making 10 putouts and recording a .958 fielding percentage. Hudson was also a 2011 Henlopen South second-team honoree and guided the Bulldogs to a 13-5 record during the regular season last year

The UMES softball team will begin play in 2013 with a pair of doubleheaders against St. Peter's (N.J.) University on January 9-10.
