Douglas, Hawks Bolster Pitching With Three Newcomers
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball Team bolstered their pitching rotation with the addition of three new arms. The new Hawks solidified a pitching staff featuring Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) All-Conference selection Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.).
LeAnn Gingrich - Pitcher – Landisburg, Pa. – West Perry H.S.
Gingrich comes to The Shore after a successful career at West Perry H.S. (Elliotsburg, Pa.). In her final season, she was selected to the All-Star First Team while guiding the club to a pair of championships with an 18-3 mark. That same season, she accumulated a 1.82 ERA and fanned 42 hitters in more than 65 innings of work.
“LeAnn is a steady rock on the mound,” Douglas stated. “She brings a calming influence to the field while also getting the job done. She is an outstanding pitcher who moves the ball well.”
At the plate, LeAnn batted .361 with a .508 OBP in her senior season. In 2014, she played for the Lancaster Lady Stormers and led the club to a fourth-place finish in the national tournament in Salisbury, Md.
This upcoming season, LeAnn joins the Hawks alongside her sister, Allison, and plans to study Nutrition and Dietetics.
Erin Hallman - Pitcher/Infielder – Lakewood, Colo. – Bar Creek H.S.
Hallman, who signed during the early signing period, was a two-sport student-athlete (softball and golf) at Bar Creek H.S. (Lakewood, Colo.). In her final season, the two-time softball honorable mention fanned the most hitters in a single season. As a member of the Colorado Majestix (Broomfield, Colo.), she tossed 20 shutouts while collecting eight Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards.
“Erin is primary a pitcher, but can also play second if needed,” said Douglas. “With her command of several pitches, she will be looked upon as one of the top rookie pitchers in the conference.”
Academically, Hallman was a seven-time Jeffco Academic Honor Roll recipient and five-time All-State receiver. The three-time academic letter winner also was selected to the National Honor Society for High School Scholars (NSHSS) twice.
This season, Erin and senior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) are the lone Hawks from the Centennial State.
Derricia Toppin - Pitcher/Third Base – Onancock, Va. – Nandua H.S.
Toppin travels less than an hour to Princess Anne from Onancock, Va. where she was a two-sport student-athlete at Nandua H.S. (Onley, Va.). In softball, she was selected to the All-District First Team every season (2012-16) while being named Pitcher of the Year three times (2012-15).
“Defensively, Derricia has good range and a strong arm,” Douglas stated. “She has outstanding footwork around the bag. She will be relied on as an offensive threat.”
Toppin finished her high school career with a 1.23 ERA while batting .375 at the plate.
Derricia plans to study biology in the fall.
