PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – This week’s Hawk Talk edition features UMES Athletes of the Week, baseball & bowling news, golf host free clinic, weekly results, and more, including Capital One Standings.

Time to get you caught up with all your UMES latest news:


Last Monday (04/28), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) baseball Jesse Stinnett (Madison Heights, Va.) was named UMES Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) Athlete of the Week, along with Michael Veverka (golf), for his performance versus Coppin State University (CSU). Stinnett pitched a complete game as he gave up only five hits in the Hawks’ 4-1 victory.

The next day (04/29), UMES baseball head coach Pedro Swann announced the cancellation between UMES and the University of Maryland Baltimore-County (UMBC) for last Wednesday (04/30) due to inclement weather. Both squads are not scheduled for a make-up date.

This past weekend (05/03-05/04), the Hawks were swept by Norfolk State University (NSU), 3-0, at Hawks Stadium.

On May 3rd, Maryland Eastern Shore was swept in a doubleheader by Norfolk State, 12-2 and 7-1, respectively. Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) was 4-for-7 on the day. The next day (05/04), UMES dropped the final contest of the series, 15-1.

This Friday (05/09), the Hawks face Delaware State University (DSU) in a doubleheader at Hawks Stadium. First-pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. (EST)


Last week, the bowling team dropped a spot in the final coaches’ poll from the National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA). The Hawks finished fourth, trailing Sam Houston State University, Nebraska, and Arkansas State University.

Additionally, the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association (NCBCA) awarded their annual All-Academic Awards and five Hawks were recognized: Mariana Alvarado (Leon, Mexico); Megan Buja (Rockford, Ill.); Juliana Franco (Pereira, Columbia); Tatiana Munoz (Ibague Tolima, Colombia); and Sara Pelayo (Distrito Federal, Mexico).

Also, Munoz set a new Central American record, shooting a whopping 2747 over six games and averaging 228.92 per-game, at the International Tournament in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Munoz took home gold in the event as well.

On April 17th, the Hawks wrapped up their season by finishing in fifth-place at the United States Bowling Congress (USBC) ITC.


On April 28th, UMES golfer Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) won UMES PRMC Athlete of the Week, alongside Jesse Stinnett (baseball), for his performance at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships. Veverka finished fifth after ending the three-day event at +3 over par.

On the same day (04/28), Veverka was named to the 2014 MEAC Men’s Golf All-Tournament Team for his efforts at the MEAC Championships.

Last Thursday (05/01), the UMES Golf Academy hosted a free clinic at the UMES Driving Range, just behind Hawks Field. UMES Golf Head Coach Marshall Cropper opened to the clinic to the public.

This weekend (05/09-05/11), the Hawks will wrap-up the season in Port St.Lucie, Fla. at the PGA Minority Championship. First-tee will be announced at a later date.


Last Thursday (05/01), UMES softball senior Carmen Frazier (Montgomery Village, Md.) garnered her first award of the season as she was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District Softball Team.

Last weekend (05/03-05/04), the Lady Hawks were swept in their final home series of the season against Delaware State University (DSU), 3-0.

Last Saturday (05/03), the softball team was unable to slow down the hot bats of DSU as they fell to the Lady Hornets in both contests, 11-3 and 8-2, respectively. Sophomore Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) went 2-of-3 while fellow sophomore Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) and junior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) each recorded a RBI in the Game One loss.

The following day (05/04), Maryland Eastern Shore fell short to Delaware State, 8-4, in their home season finale. In the contest, the Lady Hawks said farewell to a trio of seniors: Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.); Carmen Frazier (Montgomery Village, Md.); and Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.).


On April 24-26, the men’s track & field team participated in the Penn Relays, located in Philadelphia, Pa. The senior trio of Javon Spencer (Montego Bay, Jamaica), Ramone Waite (Kingston, Jamaica), and Aaron Chatmon (Waldorf, Md.) finished first in the 4x00 relays.

On the second day of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships (05/02), the men’s team finished in second place with 41 points, led by Dillon Simon (Pottersville, Dominica) earning 20 of the Hawks’ total points. Senior Rico Taylor (Silver Springs, Md.) received first place in the high-jump.

The next day (05/03), the team finished fourth in the MEAC Championships. Simon set two conference records while being named MEAC Top Fielder.

On May 16-18, the team travels to Princeton, N.J. to compete in the IC4A/ECAC Championships. The meet times for the three-day event will be released at a later date.


On April 24-26, the women’s track & field team took part in the Penn Relays and had fine relay performances. Senior Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica), sophomores Jheniel Kelly (Edgewood, Md.) and Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine’s, Jamaica), and junior Annis Mars (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed second in the 4x400 relays.

On Day Two of the MEAC Championships (05/02), the women’s track finished in third place. Several Lady Hawks had strong performances, such as Evans qualifying for the 200-meter dash along with Kelly, Hemley, and Mars qualifying for the 800-meter run. The following day (05/03), the Lady Hawks placed ninth in the MEAC Championships.

On May 16-18, the track team participates in the IC4A/ECAC Championships in Princeton, N.J. Meet times to be determined.


Capital One Cup

For the third consecutive season, UMES ranked among the top 50 in the Capital One Cup Women’s Standings. Currently, Maryland Eastern Shore is tied for 41st with Alabama, Boston College, Colorado, and Cornell.
