April 23, 2012

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore athletics program featured several bouts of action this past week. The bowling team concluded their season at the ITCs, while the baseball and softball teams were swept in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference road contests. The track teams ran well at the Morgan State Invitational and the golf team participated at the MEAC Showcase in Pooler, Ga.

Let’s take a look at action from this past week:

The UMES bowling team concluded its 2011-12 season this past week as the women bowed out in the fourth round of the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships in Lincoln, Neb. The Hawks were eliminated on Friday after falling to the tournament’s top-seed, Wichita State. Wichita State pinned a 4-3 decision over the Hawks.

The Hawks received the No. 5 seed after the qualifying round, but were upset by No. 12 Newman in the first-round, 4-2. The loss put the Hawks into the loser’s bracket, where the Hawks eliminated Wright State, 4-0, in the following match. UMES won its next game as well against West Texas A&M on Friday, before concluding its season with the loss to Wichita St.

Despite the early exit from the tournament, UMES still has a lot of be proud of. The Hawks claimed their second consecutive NCAA Division I National Championship last week. Also, sophomore Megan Buja (Rockford, Ill.) won the Elite 89 Award and junior T’nia Falbo (Greenburg, Pa.) was recently honored with the Bowling Writers’ Association of America (BWAA) Honorable Mention selection.

UMES went 0-4 this past week.

The men opened up with a 10-0 loss to Navy on Tuesday afternoon. Sophomore Byron Campbell (Waldorf, Md.) posted two hits, while four others notched one. The Hawks saw three relievers hurl just nearly three innings of scoreless ball to conclude the match.

The first game against Delaware State on Friday was one to forget for the Hawks as they fell 12-0 in seven innings. The nightcap saw senior Jacob Foreman (Little Orleans, Md.) post another quality start, when he threw six innings for no earned runs. His effort was not enough as the Hawks were defeated 3-2 in seven innings by the Hornets. Senior Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) was the top performer for the Hawks offensively as he was 3-for-5.

The third game of the series featured Delaware State pinning a 17-2 decision over UMES on Saturday.

The track & field results at the Morgan State Invitational were unavailable as of press time.

Junior Ackeem Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) was selected as this week's feature student-athlete for UMES' newest column, A Walk with a Hawk ... His article can be found here.

Sophomore Michael Veverka (Brunswick, Md.) shot consecutive rounds of 78 to finish off play as he led the University of Maryland Eastern Shore golf team to a fifth-place finish in the MEAC Showcase at the Crosswinds Golf Club in Pooler, Ga. The Hawks totaled 991 points in the tournament and saw two players record top-20 finishes.

The other UMES golfer to place in the top-20 was sophomore Paul Cecil (Severn, Md.), who claimed 20th place.

Veverka’s efforts this week helped him in being distinguished as the men’s recipient of this week’s PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week. The article can be found here.

For the first time in two weeks, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team was in action, but the Hawks would drop a pair of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference games to Hampton University. UMES fell 5-2 in the opener, before losing 9-1 in the nightcap.

Sophomore Jade Nelson (Lithonia, Ga.) was the top performer for UMES with the bat as she was 2-for-3 in game one with one RBI. Gurrola was 2-for-2 from the plate in game two and hurled six innings for three earned runs in the opener. She induced 23 fly outs in 11 innings.

Gurrola’s efforts this week helped her in being distinguished as the women’s recipient of this week’s PRMC UMES Athlete of the Week. The article can be found here.
