PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Tomorrow (03/08), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team opens a four-game series against Maryland Baltimore-County (UMBC) in a doubleheader at Hawks Field. First-pitches are set for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. (EST), respectively.

The next day (03/09), the teams will meet in a doubleheader as game-times are slated for noon and 2:00 p.m. (EST), respectively.


The Lady Hawks could not secure a victory in the Coastal Carolina Invitational, located in Conway, S.C., as they went 0-5 overall. On the opening day, UMES fell short to Marshall University, 5-4, and the host team, Coastal Carolina University, 11-2. On day two, the softball team dropped two games against Samford University, 17-1, and Saint Peter’s University, 6-5. On the final day, Maryland Eastern Shore was shutout by Coastal Carolina University (CCU), 9-0.


In the three-day tournament, Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) was the lone Maryland Eastern Shore player to make the 2014 Coastal Carolina Invitational All-Tournament Team as she finished the tournament hitting .500 (5-of-10), including two doubles, two RBIs, two runs, two walks, and a homer against Saint Peter’s University.

Other notable Hawk performance during the tournament included Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.), Kelly Cullen (Fruitland, Md.), Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.), Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.), and Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.).


In tomorrow’s contest, UMBC comes in 9-3 overall, including a 3-2 road record. As a team, the Retrievers are hitting nearly .300 (103-of-347), led by junior Taylor Hall and freshman Jaclyn Buckley. Hall, a two-time American East Player of the Week honoree, leads the team in multiple offensive categories, including hits (15), RBIs (14), and slugging percentage (.692).  Buckley, the reigning American East Rookie of the Week, is batting .359 (14-of-39) with five RBIs.

On the mound, the Retrievers’ pitching staff is allowing under four runs-per-game (3.63), led by freshman Jessica Holte. The two-time American East Pitcher of the Week honoree has won six contests in six appearances, all complete games, so far this season. In 43 innings of work, Holte has amassed a 2.12 ERA with 19 strikeouts.


On Wednesday (03/12), the Lady Hawks host the University of Rhode Island. First-pitch is booked for 1:00 p.m. (EST)
