Feb. 8, 2013

NORFOLK, Va. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference released its 2013 Softball Preseason Predictions and sophomore Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) was named as the utility player on the All-MEAC Preseason Team. Her selection highlighted the predictions for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore as the squad was voted to finish seventh in the MEAC North.

The awards were voted on by the conference's head softball coaches and sports information directors.

King receives the award after she hit .330 with nine doubles, two homeruns and 20 RBIs as a freshman last year. She was named to the College Sports Madness 2012 All-Conference team and was an All-MEAC Second Team honoree last year. King played five different positions for the Lady Hawks and started and played in all 34 games. King was one of three MEAC North players to be honored on the team.

Delaware State received the most points (268) and first-place votes (15) to stand atop the preseason predictions in the MEAC North. Norfolk State was second with 240 points and six first-place votes, while Hampton had 218. Coppin State and Howard finished fourth and fifth, respectively, and Morgan State was sixth with 137 points. The Lady Hawks rounded out the top-7 in the division with 108 points.

Bethune-Cookman notched the most points of any MEAC school with 280 and 16 first-place votes to be named as the favorite to win the south. Norfolk State's Haley Ward was selected as the 2013 Preseason Player of the Year, while Savannah State's Madison Hedderly was the Preseason Pitcher of the Year. Savannah State had the most players named to the preseason team with three.  North Carolina A&T, Bethune-Cookman and Norfolk State each had two, while UMES and Florida A&M each had one recipient.

The Lady Hawks open up their season tomorrow, Feb.9, with a double header at home against St. Peter's. The first pitch will be thrown at 1 p.m.
