PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team closed out its 2012-13 home schedule on Wednesday afternoon as the Lady Hawks were swept in two games by Central Connecticut State at Hawk Field. The women opened with a tough 2-0 loss in the opener, before falling in five innings, 10-1, in the second contest. With the loss, UMES moves to 13-33 on the year.

UMES was propelled in the doubleheader by senior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.), who fired a complete-game eight hitter in the opener and allowed just two runs with two strikeouts. She led the offense with three hits on the day, all of which came in the nightcap. Sophomore Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) was the only player to log hits in both games, while junior Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) was 1-for-3 in the opener and logged the only RBI in the second game.

The women opened the first game with a 2-0 loss against Central Connecticut State (33-13). It was a pitcher’s duel throughout as Gurrola and Central Connecticut’s Laura Messina were each fantastic. The game was scoreless through the first three innings as the pair combined to limit the opposition to just three hits. CCSU posted a single tally in the fourth, before adding another in the sixth.

The Lady Hawks led off the home portion of the sixth with consecutive singles by senior Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) and Gurrola. The two would move up one base apiece after a groundout by freshman Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) to put the winning run at the plate, but Messina would thwart the rally by retiring the next two UMES hitters in order. The teams would combine for two scoreless frames to close the game as CCSU took the game one victory in seven.

The nightcap saw the score even at 0-0 after one inning of play. It was in the second where Central Connecticut made its charge with five runs, before they posted two in the third. The 7-0 lead would jump up to 10-0 with three runs in the fourth, but UMES made a charge in the fifth.

King and freshman Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) began the bottom of the seventh with singles. The two would move into scoring position on a ball in play by junior Carmen Frazier (Montgomery Village, Md.), before King scored on an RBI by Alston. Freshman Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, Md.) found solid contact with two outs, but her liner was caught to secure the sweep for CCSU.

Central Connecticut was led by the play of Messina, who fanned 12 in seven innings to notch the complete-game shutout in the opener. Arielle Bruno was 3-for-4 with two runs and five RBI in the second game, while Hannah Cooper combined to go 4-for-5 with two runs and five RBI between the two contests.

The Lady Hawks resume action with two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference contests at Delaware State on Saturday, May 4 beginning at 2 p.m. The two teams will engage in a doubleheader, before UMES concludes its play on the year with a single game on Sunday.
