PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Freshman Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) clubbed her second home run of the season but the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team would fall 12-8 in the series decider against Morgan State on Sunday. The game was senior day for three UMES seniors in Belen Benitez (E. Los Angeles, Calif.), Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) and Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.). The teams split two games on Saturday and MSU takes the series with a win in Sunday’s rubber match.

UMES (13-31, 4-11 MEAC) was led by Nash, who was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Gurrola also was 2-for-4 with three runs, while freshman Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) walked twice to up her consecutive games of reaching base streak to 18. Benitez and Gurrola each pitched, as Benitez highlighted action with just one run allowed in 2.2 innings of relief.

The Lady Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning. Gomez opened with a walk and then proceeded to steal second. After James lined out to left, Gurrola walked and Nash singled to load the bases. Sophomore Morgan King (Danville, Va.) and freshman Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) would follow with RBI walks, before junior Carmen Frazier (Montgomery Village, Md.) singled home a pair to make the score 4-0.

Morgan State (7-32, 4-10 MEAC) would go on to score the game’s next five runs, but UMES notched three in the fourth to take the lead once again.

Gomez once again led off with a walk and moved over on a one-out single by Gurrola. The pair would each come around on the three-run blast by Nash to give UMES a 7-4 advantage. The lead would not last for long as Morgan State used a six-run fifth inning to take a 10-4 lead and never look back.

The Lady Hawks capped their scoring in the sixth when Gurrola singled and scored on an RBI single by King. It was as close as UMES would get the rest of the way. With the loss, UMES has now lost 10 of its past 12 games.

The Lady Hawks will play their final home games of the 2013 season with a doubleheader against Central Connecticut State on Wednesday, May 1 beginning at 1 p.m.
