PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- On a cold and cloudy day, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Softball Team took on in-state rival Morgan State and dropped both contests to the Lady Bears. Morgan State rallied to win game one, 8-5, and the Lady Hawks' comeback fell short in game two, 4-3.

With both setbacks, the squad fell to 7-28 (4-10 MEAC) overall while the Lady Bears moved to 6-25 (5-9 MEAC) on the season.

In game one, the Lady Hawks registered five runs on seven hits. Junior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and sophomore Alexis Hudson (Laurel, Del.) each recorded two hits and two runs scored. Fellow sophomore Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) went 1-of-3 with two RBIs in a losing effort.

Morgan State scored on a Lady Hawk miscue to take an early 1-0 lead. In their first at-bat, UMES answered. Hudson bunt singled, followed by a walk from Gomez to put runners on first and second. With two outs and runners in scoring position, Schnyder delivered a two-run single through the right side and gave Maryland Eastern Shore the advantage after one inning of play, 2-1.

After a scoreless second, sophomore Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) doubled to left center to drive in another run and put UMES ahead after three innings, 3-1. Next inning, a RBI-triple from newcomer Princess Davis (Frederick, Md.) drove in fellow newcomer Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) to stretch the margin to three runs after four innings, 4-1.

In the fifth, Morgan State trimmed the deficit to two runs, 4-2. In the sixth, the Lady Bears rallied to take the lead by scoring four runs, capped off by a three-run shot from Zina Constancia, 6-4.

Morgan State's rally extended into the seventh as they posted two additional runs to take a four-run lead, 8-4. UMES refused to give up as Hudson tripled down the right field line to start a two-out rally. Gomez singled to bring home Hudson, but the Lady Hawks eventually fell to Morgan State, 8-5.

For the Lady Bears, Constancia went a perfect 3-of-3 with three RBIs, a homer, and a walk in the victory.

In the night cap, Schnyder and Tesharra Hill (Chatsworth, Calif.) each went 3-of-3 from the plate. Also, Hill had a game-high three RBIs in a losing effort.

Morgan State got on the board first as they produced two runs in the opening inning, 2-0. Next inning, the Lady Bears added another run to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

After a scoreless third, the Lady Hawks came alive in the fourth. Schnyder doubled to left center, then junior Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) singled up-the-middle to put runners on the corners. Once Nash reached base, UMES Softball Head Coach Sam Douglas subbed Davis for Nash to put more speed on the bases. The move paid off as Davis stole second and gave Maryland Eastern Shore runners in scoring position. With one out and runners on second and third, Hill drove the ball to left center and trimmed the margin down to a run after four innings, 3-2.

Morgan State responded in the fifth, thanks to a RBI-single by Constancia, and increase the Lady Bears lead back to two runs, 4-2.

After a scoreless six, the Lady Hawks made one last comeback. Hill opened the seventh on a leadoff homer, but UMES' comeback fell short as they fell to the Lady Bears, 4-3.

For Morgan State, Audrianna Alvarez went 3-of-4 with a RBI and run scored. Senior Claudett Tanabe-Smith ended her afternoon, going 2-of-4 with a RBI in the win.

Tomorrow (04/26), Maryland Eastern Shore looks to avoid a season sweep as they take on Morgan State at Hawks Field. Tomorrow's contest is Senior Day and the Lady Hawks will honor lone senior Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) before the first-pitch. Game-time is set for 1 p.m.
