HAMPTON, Va. – For the third time this week, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to Hampton University, as the Hawks were defeated, 11-0, in five innings. The game on Tuesday was a makeup from Sunday’s rainout. The Hawks tallied just two hits in the contest.

UMES (0-28, 0-12 MEAC) fell behind to Hampton (19-26, 7-4 MEAC) right from the get go. The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings, before dropping a five spot on the Hawks in the third. The event was called early after HU scored three in the fourth and UMES was blanked in the fifth.

The Hawks picked up two hits against Hampton, as senior Cy’Anna Scott (Paterson, N.J.) and sophomore Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) each posted singles. Junior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) tossed four innings and allowed 11 runs (10 earned), while fanning three and giving up 12 hits.

Hampton was paced by Carla Trimble, who went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs. Trimble was one of three hitters to post two hits. Travonna Byrd picked up her 10th win of the year with a five-inning, two strikeout effort.

UMES looks to improve its effort on Saturday, April 28, when the Hawks travel to Morgan State University for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
