Bears Sweep Doubleheader Despite Guerra’s Career Performance

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – On a rainy and cloudy afternoon, junior pitcher Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) gave the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team a chance to knock off division leading Morgan State (MSU) with a career performance.

In game one, the California native struck out a career-high 16 hitters in 11 innings of work, also a new career-high. At the dish, Guerra tied her career-highs in hits (3) and RBIs (2).

Despite her efforts, Eastern Shore (10-22, 4-10 MEAC) dropped the contest in extra innings, 5-4, then the Bears (21-14, 10-1 MEAC) followed up with a 10-0 victory in the nightcap.

Lone senior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) went 3-of-5 with a run scored in game one while outfielder Sarah Maldonado (Carson, Calif.) provided two hits in the eighth spot.

After three scoreless innings, Morgan State’s Korynna Lara delivered a two-run double to left field and put the Bears ahead, 2-0.

Next inning, a solo shot from MSU’s Kate Vosper extended the lead, 3-0.

Bottom five, Maryland Eastern Shore cracked the code and scored three times to tie the game, 3-3.


 

 

Morgan State scored twice in the 11th and reclaimed the advantage, 5-3.

Bottom 11, sophomore Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, N.J.) reached on an error and drove in fellow classmate Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, N.J.), 5-4.

With two away and bases loaded, MSU’s Amy Begg sealed the deal for Morgan State as she flied out the final batter.

In the nightcap, Eastern Shore managed only two hits with both coming from junior Ciara Walters (Thurmont, Md.).

Morgan State attacked early with three runs in the first, 3-0, followed by three more in the second, 6-0.

In the third, MSU’s Audrianna Alvarez added to the Bears’ lead with a two-run single to center, 8-0.

Top five, the Bears increase their advantage with two more runs, 10-0.

Sunday’s (April 30) seven-inning contest starts at noon.

Furthermore, Sunday is Senior Day and Anderson will be honored before the contest.
