Lady Hawks’ Comeback Falls Short Against Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. – Trailing 4-0 going into the seventh, Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team made a valiant comeback, but came up short as they lost to Hampton, 4-3, at Lady Pirates Softball Stadium.

For Maryland Eastern Shore (9-23, 2-8 MEAC), they registered three runs on five hits. Freshman MacKenzie Brown (Bayonne, N.J.) went 2-of-3, including a double and RBI.

Senior Emily Diseroad (Manchester, Md.) opened the seventh reaching on an error. Then, fellow classmate Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) walked and placed runners on first and second.

After newcomer Kiana Peterson (Willingsboro, N.J.) came in and pinched ran for Nash, sophomore Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) singled to left field and loaded the bases.

Catcher Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) sac flied to left field and gave UMES their first score of the game, 4-1. With two away and runners on first and second, Brown singled up-the-middle and scored Peterson; thus, cutting into Hampton’s lead, 4-2.



Next up, outfielder Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) delivered a shot to short and scored another run, 4-3. After a pitching change, junior Allison Anderson loaded the bases with a walk. With bases loaded, the Lady Hawks grounded out to third to end the contest.

Hampton (15-24, 7-5 MEAC) produced four runs on seven hits, led by Hope Sobelewski delivering a solo shot in the fourth. Jada Fields went 2-of-3 with a double and RBI in the victory.

This Wednesday (April 20), Maryland Eastern Shore travels to Newark, Del. to face the Delaware Blue Hens in a nonconference doubleheader. First-pitch is set for 3 p.m.

On April 21, the Lady Hawks meet Norfolk State in a conference doubleheader at Hawks Field. Game-time is scheduled for noon.
