PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team were swept in their conference doubleheader versus the Hampton Lady Pirates at Hawk Field.

Hampton (12-18, 7-1 MEAC) blanked The Shore (10-18, 4-6 MEAC) in game one, 5-0, then the Hawks’ late rally fell short in the nightcap, 3-2.

Eastern Shore was held to only four hits in game one. Senior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and sophomore Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, Del.) each recorded two hits in the loss.

Scoreless after five innings, the Lady Pirates’ Quierra Bradford and Ashley Grassini highlighted the squad’s five-run inning with back-to-back homers.

Hampton’s Allyson Babinsack would take advantage and kept Eastern Shore off the board.

Maryland Eastern Shore managed only five hits in the nightcap; however, sophomore MacKenzie Brown (Bayonne, N.J.) delivered the biggest hit with her first-career homer in the seventh.

Hampton got on the board first, thanks to a RBI-single from Cassidy Blackwell, 1-0.

Top five, the Lady Pirates’ Taylor Warwick singled to centerfield and brought home another run, 2-0.

Next inning, Hampton capitalized on The Shore’s miscue and took a commanding 3-0 lead.

In their final at-bat, Eastern Shore would not go quietly into the night.

With two away, Brown homered to left center and cut the deficit to two runs, 3-1.

After a single up-the-middle from sophomore Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, N.J.), Anderson doubled down the leftfield line and sent home Jones to pull the within one, 3-2.

Hampton’s Allie Hotetz popped up the next batter to end the Hawks’ threat.

Maryland Eastern Shore concludes the series with Hampton Saturday (April 15) at Hawk Field. First-pitch is set for noon.
