BALTIMORE – After more than a week away, Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team could not shake off the rust as they were blanked twice at UMBC.

UMBC (18-20) edged out The Shore (10-16) in game one, 1-0, then came back and shutout Maryland Eastern Shore in the nightcap, 5-0.

In game one, Eastern Shore stranded seven runners despite only four hits. Sophomore catcher Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, Del.) recorded a multi-hit game, going 2-of-3 at the dish. Senior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) each registered a hit in the loss.

UMBC’s Maddie Daigneau delivered the game’s lone run with a RBI-single in the third.

Despite the loss, Guerra gave Maryland Eastern Shore a chance as she tossed six innings while allowing only one run on six hits. The California native also struck out five Retrievers.

In the nightcap, Guerra and newcomers Nicole Baker (Elizabethtown, Pa.) and Ciara Walters (Thurmont, Md.) were the lone Hawks to produce a hit.

After a scoreless first inning, UMBC’s Kelly Lane put the Retrievers on the board with a two-run shot to left field, 2-0.

Bottom four, the Retrievers doubled their lead with two more runs, 4-0.

Next inning, UMBC scored once more in the fifth to make the final score 5-0.

On April 14-15, the Hawks host conference rival Hampton in a three-game series.

The series starts with a Friday (April 14) doubleheader at 1 p.m., followed by Saturday’s (April 15) seven-inning contest at noon.
