NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) struck out six and freshman Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) connected for two doubles as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team won the final game of its three-game series, 9-6, against Norfolk State on Sunday. The win salvages the series for UMES as the women dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Saturday. With the victory, UMES moves to 11-21 on the year and 3-6 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

The Lady Hawks were led by Gurrola, who threw her second complete game in two days. She combined to allow just four earned runs and one walk. Gomez collected a game-high three hits with two doubles and freshman Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) was 2-for-4 with three RBI. The team stole three bags and had four women notch multi-hit games.

UMES opened with two runs in the first against Norfolk State (15-18, 8-1). Gomez singled, stole second and scored three batters later on a ball put in play by sophomore Morgan King (Danville, Ill.). The women would make it 2-0 after Gurrola scored on NSU's second error of the inning. The Lady Spartans notched two in the bottom half of the frame, before a scoreless second was seen.

The maroon and gray would explode with three more runs in the third as five of their first six hitters in the inning reached base safely.  The damage was seen by a two-run single by Nash and senior Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.), who stole home a short time later. NSU would chip away at its deficit with another two run inning, but UMES was out to make a statement in the fourth.

Junior Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) singled to open the frame and scored on Gomez's second double of the game. With one away, Gurrola singled home Gomez to make the score 7-4. UMES made the score 9-4 a short time later on an RBI single by Nash and a run scored by James.

Gurrola would allow two more runs in the bottom of the frame, but the tallies were as much as the Lady Spartans would get the rest of the way. She would shut them down for the final three innings to pick up her ninth win of the year. Gurrola finished the series with nearly 21 innings pitched, 16 strikeouts and just one walk. She allowed just five earned runs across three games.

NSU had seven players collect hits, three of which had multi-hit performances. The team was led by Haley Ward, who was 2-for-4 with two homers, three RBI and two runs scored.

The Lady Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 9 with a doubleheader against Delaware State beginning at 1 p.m.
