FAIRFAX, Va. – After a tough outing against Norfolk State, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Softball Team rebounded with a nonconference split at George Mason.

Patriots (15-14) took game one, 3-1, but the Lady Hawks held on to win the nightcap, 3-2.

With the victory, Maryland Eastern Shore (8-19) surpassed their previous win total mark, 7, over the past two seasons.

In game two, UMES produced only three hits as Mason’s tandem, Sarah Kleinfelter and Marina Vitalich, kept the Lady Hawks’ bats under control. Freshman MacKenzie Brown (Bayonne, N.J.) senior Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and junior Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) each recorded a hit.

Despite only three hits, the club capitalized on the Patriots’ five miscues.

After a scoreless opening inning, the Lady Hawks scored three times on four errors from Mason; thus, taking the early advantage, 3-0.

In the fifth, George Mason’s Jess Middleton homered and closed the gap, 3-1. Middleton inched the Patriots closer with a RBI-single in the sixth, 3-2.

UMES’ sophomore pitcher Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) would hold off Mason’s late comeback as she sat down all three batters in the seventh. The California native earned her sixth victory of the season after tossing her 13th complete game of the year.

Mason’s Gabriella Lopez held the Lady Hawks to only two hits in game one. Junior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) registered both hits and picked up her sixth multi-hit performance of the season.

In the circle, senior Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) gave Maryland Eastern Shore an opportunity to win as she held the Patriots to three runs (two earned). Hitch ended her afternoon going six innings while scattering six hits.

In the first inning, Mason’s Liz Seymour put the Patriots on the board with a sac fly to centerfield, 1-0. George Mason added two runs in the third to lead, 3-0.

Anderson scored on a passed ball in the seventh, but UMES’ comeback would fall, 3-1.

Lopez tossed a complete game for the Patriots, going seven innings and a strikeout.

Maryland Eastern Shore will have the weekend off from conference play; however, the club returns home to face in-state rival UMBC on Wednesday, April 13.

The doubleheader action begins 2:30 p.m. at Hawks Field.
