Final Stats

NORFOLK, Va. – After splitting Sunday’s doubleheader, Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team blanked Norfolk State (NSU), 4-0, at NSU Softball Field.

With the victory, Maryland Eastern Shore improved to 10-14 (4-4 MEAC) on the season and won the season series over NSU for the first time since 2013.

The Shore also reached double-digit wins for the second consecutive season. This is the second time under the Coach Douglas era where the Hawks earned back-to-back double-digit win seasons.

Offensively, Eastern Shore racked up four runs on 10 hits. Three Hawks recorded a multi-hit game, led by senior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.). Anderson went 2-of-3 with a pair of doubles and runs scored while Guerra tied a career-high three hits in the victory.

Maryland Eastern Shore took the early lead after one, thanks to a sac fly from junior Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.), 1-0.

In the fourth, freshman Tori Jo Brown (Front Royal, Va.) launched a solo shot to left center and gave the Hawks a 2-0 advantage.

Next inning, Guerra’s RBI-single drove in another run and increased the lead, 3-0.

Top seven, Eastern Shore capitalized on the Spartans’ miscue and took a commanding 4-0 advantage where Guerra would seal the deal.

In the circle, Guerra delivered another stellar performance for The Shore. The California native tossed her fourth complete-game shutout of the year, striking out eight Spartans in seven innings of work.

Despite leaving 10 runners on base, Norfolk State (9-13, 2-4 MEAC) managed only three hits against the Hawks. Outfielder Devon Bitler collected two hits while first baseman Kayla McNair picked up the other one.

On April 12, Maryland Eastern Shore returns to Baltimore for a midweek doubleheader against UMBC before hosting conference rival Hampton in a three-game series (April 14-15).

Wednesday’s action versus the Retrievers begin at 1 p.m.

The three-game series starts with a Friday (April 14) doubleheader at 1 p.m., followed by Saturday’s (April 15) seven-inning contest at noon.
