Box Score

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Junior Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) had two hits and freshman Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) ripped an RBI triple, but it was not enough as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team fell to Coppin State, 5-2, in eight innings on Saturday. The loss is the third consecutive for UMES as the women were swept in a three-game series by CSU. With the loss, UMES goes to 10-19 and 2-4 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.

Despite losing the contest, UMES had four players register multi-hit games. Alston was 3-for-4 with a run, while senior Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) and freshman Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) had two knocks. Senior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) hit safely twice and had an RBI single in the seventh.

The pitching from each side was fantastic in the game as no score was seen through the first four innings of play. Coppin State broke the ice with a solo run in the fifth on an RBI double by Kimberlynn Brown. CSU upped its advantage to 2-0 when Gabriel Zeller led off with a single and scored two batters later.

With their backs against the wall, the Lady Hawks tallied a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Alston led off with a single, before coming home on a triple by Gomez. Gomez was then sent home the following batter on an RBI single by Gurrola. The scoring was all UMES would get in the inning as Coppin State’s Mellizienne Richardson would bare down and collect three consecutive outs.

Senior Belen Benitez (E. Los Angeles, Calif.) gave up a pair of hits to begin the eighth and would run into trouble after allowing a one-out triple that brought in two runs. CSU plated an insurance run following the triple and entered the bottom of the frame with a three-run advantage.

The first two Lady Hawks were retired to begin the following inning, but Alston and Gomez would reach base safely to put the tying run at the plate with two outs. The rally was thwarted the next batter as Gurrola flied out to left to end the contest.

Benitez was saddled with her eighth loss of the season after she fired three innings with four runs (two earned) with one strikeout. Gurrola started the contest and allowed just one run in five innings of work.

CSU was led by Bowen and Nicole Boggs, who had two hits apiece. Alyssa Barker did not allow a run through five and Richardson was credited with the win with two innings of four-hit ball.

UMES will take a week off before traveling to Norfolk State on Saturday, April 6. The Lady Hawks will engage in a doubleheader with the Spartans beginning at 1 p.m.
