PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team split with in-state rival Coppin State (CSU) at Hawk Field.

CSU (3-19, 1-1 MEAC) took game one, 3-1, but Eastern Shore (7-13, 1-3 MEAC) bounced back and won game two, 10-8.

In the nightcap, Eastern Shore manufactured 10 runs on 14 hits. Junior Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) led the Hawk attack, going a perfect 4-of-4 with a RBI and run scored. However, the biggest blow came from sophomore Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, N.J.) with a grand slam.

After a scoreless first inning, Coppin State scored twice in the second and took the early advantage, 2-0.

Maryland Eastern Shore responded with seven runs on eight hits in the bottom half, capped off by Peterson’s grand slam, 7-2.

Coppin State fought back and tallied three more runs in the third, highlighted by a three-run blast from Hatika James, 7-5.

Bottom four, Casarez recorded a RBI-single to increase the Hawks’ lead, 8-5.

CSU tied the contest in the fifth, scoring three runs on three hits, 8-8.

Maryland Eastern Shore regained the momentum with two runs in the sixth, 10-8.

In their final at-bat, CSU went down in order as junior Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) picked up her first save of the season.

Eastern Shore registered six hits in game one, but only came away with one run. Guerra went 2-of-3 at the plate while going seven strong innings in a losing effort.

Coppin State struck first in the third, thanks to a RBI-single from Dakota Gartrell, 1-0.

CSU kept the pressure on as they scored a run in the fourth and fifth, respectively, 3-0.

In the fifth, Eastern Shore battled back. Peterson led off with a double and advanced to third on a passed ball. With one away, senior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) delivered a RBI-triple and put Maryland Eastern Shore back in the game, 3-1.

Despite the late rally, CSU’s Madison Didion kept Eastern Shore off the board as she allowed only one hit in the final two innings.

Tomorrow’s (March 26) rubber match between Maryland Eastern Shore and Coppin State is scheduled for noon.
