PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Pitching was the name of the game on Saturday afternoon, as the University of Maryland Eastern Shore softball team was swept in a doubleheader at Hawks Field. UMES dropped a 4-1 decision in game one, before losing 4-2 in the nightcap. The doubleheader saw just two earned runs conceded by the Bison.

UMES (0-19) looked as if it were going to walk away with victory in the nightcap. With the Hawks trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the seventh, junior Kristen Lee (Bowie, Md.) doubled to open the frame and was pushed over on a ground out by senior CyAnna Scott (Paterson, N.J.). Senior Kirsten Carrington (Virginia Beach, Va.) and sophomore Jade Nelson (Lithonia, Ga.) each followed with a pair of walks, before Lee brought the game to within two after she scored on a wild pitch.

Sophomore Cherokee Williams (Upper Marlboro, Md.) would come to the plate with two runners on and served as the game's winning run. The catcher would rocket a ball to right-field, but the liner was snared by Howard first baseman, Dominique Lawrence, who quickly tagged Nelson to make the double play and end the game.

The second game saw Howard (3-11) take a four-run lead, but UMES came back with a solo run in the fourth. Junior Carmen Gurrola (Arleta, Calif.) led off with a single and was moved across the diamond on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Morgan King (Danville, Ill.). Junior Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) would follow with a bunt single that scored Gurrola and bring UMES to within three.

Following two scoreless innings, UMES came back with the late charge but were unable to come away with the victory.

UMES trailed by two in the fourth, but would capitalize on a pair of walks to open the inning. With two outs, Williams smoke a line drive to left field that would score King. HU's Lawrence thwarted the Hawk rally by fanning Carrington.

The 2-1 deficit held into the sixth, but the Bison notched one run in each of the final two innings to take the three run victory.

The Hawks were led in the doubleheader by the pitching performance of Gurrola, who allowed just eight runs in two complete games. She was 2-for-3 from the plate in the nightcap. Lee hit safely in both games, while James was 2-for-2 in the second game with one RBI.

The Bison saw Lawrence pick up the victory in game one as she fanned seven and allowed just two hits in the complete-game victory. She was also 3-for-4 in the game with two RBIs, while Brittany Barker and Andascha Moore-Pryor each had two hits.  Samantha Gatson earned the victory in game two with a seven inning, five strikeout performance.

The Hawks return to action on Sunday, March 25 at noon with a matchup to close the series against the Bison.
