CARY, N.C. – After rallying from eight runs down against South Carolina State, Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team came up short twice in their Spring Break rodeo finale.

North Carolina Central (NCCU) defeated Eastern Shore by the slimmest of margins. The Shore (6-12) dropped both contest by one run. NCCU (5-17) held on to take game one, 3-2, while winning game two with a walk-off sac fly, 4-3.

In the nightcap, Maryland Eastern Shore recorded three runs on six hits. Senior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and junior Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) each registered multi-hit performances; however, the California native delivered the biggest hit with a three-run blast.

NCCU broke the scoreless contest in the fifth, tallying three runs on five hits.

Top six, Anderson and junior Sarah Maldonado (Long Beach, Calif.) each singled to put runners on first and second. Next, Casarez drilled a three-run shot over the left field fence and tied the game, 3-3.

Bottom seven, North Carolina Central capitalized on a Hawk miscue and put runners in scoring position. With one away, NCCU’s Ryann Kostandin delivered a walk-off sac fly to center and gave N.C. Central a 4-3 victory.

In game one, junior Adrienne Guerra (Monrovia, Calif.) provided an all-round performance. At the plate, Guerra went 3-of-4 with a RBI and run scored. In the circle, she tossed six innings while striking out a season-high nine Eagles in a losing effort.

After a scoreless opening inning, North Carolina Central took the early lead in the second after a Hawk error, 1-0.

Bottom third, the Lady Eagles continued to take advantage of Eastern Shore’s miscues and tallied two more runs, 3-0.

Maryland Eastern Shore got on the board in the sixth, thanks to a RBI-double from freshman D’errica Toppin (Onacock, Va.), 3-1.

Sophomore Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, N.J.) led off the seventh with a triple to right center. With two away, Guerra produced a RBI-single down the right field line and trimmed the margin down to one, 3-2.

Despite regaining the momentum, NCCU’s Dominique Wilson ended The Shore’s hope of another comeback as she struck out the final batter. Wilson finished the contest with a career-high 12 strikeouts in the victory.

On March 25-26, Maryland Eastern Shore hosts in-state rival Coppin State in their home opener.

The three-game series starts with a Saturday (March 25) doubleheader at 1p.m., followed by Sunday’s (March 26) seven-inning contest at noon.
