SAVANNAH, Ga. – A day after the original scheduled doubleheader against Savannah State University (SSU), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team drop both contests to the Lady Tigers, 11-0 and 10-5, respectively, at Lady Tigers Softball Field.

With both losses, the Lady Hawks moved to 3-22 overall while SSU improved to 13-12 on the season.

In game one, Ciara Schnyder (Arcadia, Calif.) was the lone UMES player to earn a hit as Savannah State’s Amanda McDowell shutdown the Lady Hawks’ attack.

The Lady Tigers jumped on Maryland Eastern Shore early as they scored six runs, including a two-run homer from SSU’s Torrain Wright, and took a commanding lead, 6-0. Savannah State’s momentum continued as they scored two runs in the second, followed by three runs in the third, and ended the game in five innings, 11-0.

SSU tallied 11 runs on 15 hits while allowing no runs on one hit. Wright went 1-of-2 with three RBIs, including the first inning two-run shot, whereas McDowell threw five innings and struck out five UMES batters in the victory.

In the second contest, Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) anchored the Hawk attack as she posted two hits (2-of-4), including a double, while Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) and Kaitlyn Hitch (Delmar, Del.) recorded a RBI in a losing effort.

Contrast to game one, the Lady Hawks took an early lead after King and Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) crossed home plate, 2-0, but Savannah State answered, scoring four in the first inning, including a three-run bomb from Wright, 4-2. After two scoreless innings, UMES put together a rally.

With two outs, Gomez started the rally with a single up the gut, followed by a single from Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.), to put runners on first and third. After a wild pitch advanced Alston to second, King delivered a two-out double into right centerfield to bring home Gomez and Alston and tied the game, 4-4. Next at-bat, Nash singled to left center and drove in King, giving Maryland Eastern Shore the lead back, 5-4.

In the bottom fourth, the Lady Tigers registered two runs to reclaim the lead, 6-5, and never looked back. In the bottom of the sixth inning, SSU added four insurance runs, including a three-RBI double from Savannah State’s Amanda McDowell, to win, 10-5, to sweep the Lady Hawks.

For the Lady Tigers, McDowell and Wright each had a game-high three RBIs whereas India Morgan and Destiny Webster notched two hits each in the game two win.

Tomorrow (3/20), UMES wraps-up their six-day road trip in Orangeburg, S.C. where they will square off against the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State University (SCSU) in a doubleheader. First-pitches are set for 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. (EST), respectively.
