Box Score

HAMPTON, VA. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team picked up a 13-12 win over North Carolina Central (NCCU) in the two day Lady Pirate Classic, hosted by Hampton, on March 17-18. The Lady Hawks lost its decisions against South Carolina State (SCSU) and Winston-Salem State (WSSU) and took home a fifth place finish for the weekend.

Sophomore Kendra Saunders (Mississauga, Canada/Streetsville S.S.)led the Hawks in the win over NCCU, going 4-5 from the plate with four runs and an RBI. Freshman Mishayla Truttman (Gresham, Ore./Gresham H.S.) was 2-3 with two runs and a game high five RBI while Ashley Taylor, Shadawn Paige (Springdale, Md./Charles H. Flowers H.S.), Shakeyah Habib (Lanham, Md./Parkdale H.S.) and Brittney Anderson each picked up a hit for UMES. Habib and Anderson also added a pair of RBI in the win.

After tying things up at 1-1 in the first inning, the maroon and gray opened the floodgates in the bottom third and scored eight runs on six hits. Truttman and Saunders each scored on an error by NCCU's Kristen Schooler before Habib scored Kristen Greenwood (Bel Air, Md./Catawba College) for UMES' third run of the inning. Anderson's single scored Redden and Paige while Truttman picked up three RBI for a double that sent Saunders, Anderson and Taylor across the plate.

Habib's single in the next inning plated Paige and gave the Hawks a 10-1 lead after four.

The Lady Eagles scored four runs in the fifth inning to chip away at the advantage. NCCU added four more runs in the top of the sixth and closed within a run of the lead, but UMES sealed its win in the bottom sixth after scoring three runs, capped by a homerun by Truttman that plated two and gave the Hawks a 13-9 lead.



The maroon and gray staved off another Eagle comeback and took the close 13-12 win after NCCU scored three late runs in the seventh.

In the decision against SCSU, Truttman went 2-3 with three putouts in the 11-0 loss to the Lady Bulldogs. Tiana Strother (Upper Marlboro, Md./Charles H. Flowers H.S.), Greenwood and Paige each picked up a hit while Habib led the squad in putouts with six. Saunders had a team high three assists.

Greenwood (2-3) gave up just two hits and one run in the first three innings before the Lady Bulldogs got things going in the bottom third. SCSU capitalized on five Lady Hawk errors that inning and scored seven runs on two hits. The Lady Bulldogs tacked three more runs in the fourth when Young, Brown and Duncan all crossed the plate for SCSU.

UMES (2-7) was held scoreless by WSSU's Boswell on day two of the tourney. The pitcher struck out eight and gave up five walks in the no-hitter. The Lady Rams took an 8-0 lead in the first two innings and added six more in the fourth to take the 14-0 win.

The maroon and gray returns to action on March 20 with a doubleheader against Hampton at 2:00pm.
