CONWAY, S.C. – On day two of the Coastal Carolina Invitational, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team was unable to secure a victory as they fell to Samford University, 17-1, and Saint Peter’s University, 6-5.

With both losses, the Lady Hawks fell to 2-11 overall while the Bulldogs and Peacock improved to 15-4 and 1-1, respectively, on the young season.

Maryland Eastern Shore ran into a buzz saw as Chelsea Alston (Matawan, N.J.) and Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) were the only two Lady Hawks to collect hits in the first game. UMES was held to one run on two hits whereas Samford produced 17 runs on 18 hits.

The Bulldogs tackled Maryland Eastern Shore early-and-often as they amassed seven first innings runs, including home runs by Samford’s Abby Adams and Arica Dykes, and took a commanding lead, 7-0. In the next inning, Samford piled on an additional five runs, 12-0, and put the contest out-of-reach early. Another five runs in the fourth made the score, 17-0, but UMES refused to be shutout as they scored a run in the fifth to make the final score, 17-1.

For Samford, Adams recorded two homers with five RBIs while Dykes and Caitlin Bice each registered home runs in the victory as well.

In the nightcap, Alston and Gomez each notched multi-hit games with two hits a piece while Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) drove in a RBI in a losing effort.

Saint Peter’s Francesca D’Amato opened the ball game with a solo shot over the centerfield wall to give the Peacock an early lead, 1-0. Saint Peter’s added two more runs in the inning to take a commanding lead, 3-0.  UMES was held scoreless in the first two innings, but found some rhythm in the third.

With two outs, Alston started the Lady Hawks’ rally with a single to centerfield, followed by a walk from Gomez. A double steal from Alston and Gomez put runners in scoring positions. With two outs and runners in scoring positions, Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) delivered a single to drive in both runs and pulled the game within one, 3-2. King advanced and scored on a throwing error by Saint Peter’s catcher Michelle Tinajero and tied the contest, 3-3, after three innings.

In the top of the sixth, the Peacock scored three runs, including a homer from senior Erica Colon, to reclaim the lead, 6-3. In the bottom six, Nash drilled a homer over the centerfield fence to chip away at the deficit, 6-4. In their final at-bat, UMES scored a late run, but were unable to complete the comeback as they fell short, 6-5.

For Saint Peter’s, Colon went one-of-three with a homer and two RBIs while D’Amato also posted one hit, including the lead-off home run in the first inning, in the victory.

Tomorrow (03/02), Maryland Eastern Shore wraps-up the tournament against the host team, Coastal Carolina University (CCU). Earlier in the tournament, the Lady Hawks fell to CCU, 11-2. First-pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. (EST)
