CONWAY, S.C. – On the opening day of the Coastal Carolina Invitational, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) softball team went winless as they fell short to Marshall University, 5-4, and the host team, Coastal Carolina University, 11-2.

With both setbacks, Maryland Eastern Shore dropped to 2-9 overall whereas the Herd and Chanticleers improved to 3-8 and 8-3, respectively, on the season.

In the opening game of the tournament versus Marshall, Emily Diseroad (Manchester Valley, Md.) finished the contest going 2-of-4, including a double, with two RBIs while Trenece Nash (Decatur, Ga.) also posted two hits along with a RBI in the loss.

A single into right field by Diseroad drove home Vanessa Gomez (Belleville, N.J.) and gave UMES an early lead, 1-0, but Marshall responded with a run of their own and tied the contest after the first inning, 1-1. In the next inning, the Herd took their first lead of the game after a sac fly from Shaelynn Braxton drove in the go-ahead run to take the lead, 2-1. Next, Marshall created separation as they scored three more runs to take a commanding lead, 5-1, after three innings.

The Lady Hawks were held scoreless after putting the first run on the board until the final two innings where their bats came alive. In the top of the sixth, Morgan King (Danville, Ill.) opened the inning with a single to centerfield, followed by a pass ball to put her in scoring position. With no outs, Diseroad delivered with a RBI double to right-center to bring UMES in striking distance, 5-2. Nash added another run to make the score, 5-3, after six innings. In a last effort, Maryland Eastern Shore tagged on one more run before falling short, 5-4.

For the Herd, Racquel Escareno went a perfect 3-of-3 with a RBI while Savanah Webster recorded two hits and two RBIs in the win.

In the second game of the day, Kelly Cullen (Fruitland, Md.) sparked the bats early as she knocked in the only two runs for the Lady Hawks whereas Nash registered two hits in a losing effort.

After going scoreless in the first inning, Nash opened the top second with a single to right field. With no outs and one on base, Cullen belted a two-run blast over the left field wall to give UMES the early advantage, 2-0. Unfortunately, this would be the only offense Maryland Eastern Shore could muster as they were held scoreless for the remainder of the contest.

In the bottom of the second inning, Coastal Carolina turned the tables as they scored seven unanswered runs, including a grand slam from Kory Hayden, and took a commanding lead, 7-2. The Chanticleers continued to pile on as they scored two runs each in the third and fourth innings, 11-2, putting the contest out-of-reach.

For Coastal Carolina, Hayden and Bri Chiusano each notched four RBIs while Ashley Bagwell pitched five innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits and striking out nine UMES batters in the victory.

Maryland Eastern Shore and Coastal Carolina are scheduled to meet again this Sunday (03/02) to wrap-up the tournament. Game-time is slated for 4:00 p.m. (EST)

Tomorrow (03/01), UMES opens day two versus Samford University. First-pitch is set for 4:30 p.m. (EST) Maryland Eastern Shore wraps-up the day against St. Peter’s University. Game-time is booked for 6:30 p.m. (EST)
