Final Stats

CHARLESTON, S.C. – After nearly two weeks away from the diamond, Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team were unable to secure a victory as they were defeated twice.

In the morning, Eastern Shore’s miscues would be too much to overcome as they lost to Presbyterian (PC), 4-2. In the nightcap, Charleston Southern (CSU) blanked the Hawks, 7-0.

With both setbacks, The Shore dropped to 1-5 on the season.

In game one, junior outfielder Sarah Maldonado (Long Beach, Calif.) went 2-of-4 with a stolen base while freshman Allison Gingrich (Landisburg, Pa.) crossed home twice in a losing effort.

A throwing error by Presbyterians’ Jonnie Petree put the Hawks ahead after one, 1-0.

In the third, PC capitalized on two Hawk miscues and scored four times to take the lead, 4-1.

The Shore battled back in the fifth with a sac fly from junior Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.); thus, cutting the margin down to two, 4-2.

In the seventh, Eastern Shore made a late rally with the tying run at the plate, but the Presbyterian would get out of the jam to hold on.

In game two, the Hawks produced only three hits while CSU manufactured seven runs on 12 hits.

Charleston Southern scored twice in the second to take the early lead, 2-0.

Next inning, CSU’s Jade Gandara homered to left center to increase the deficit, 3-0.

Charleston Southern tallied another run in the fifth, followed by a three-run inning in the sixth to make the final score 7-0.

Tomorrow (Feb. 25), the Hawks wrap up the weekend with a pair of contests.

Maryland Eastern Shore takes on Boise State at 9 a.m., followed by a rematch with Charleston Southern at 3 p.m.
