GREENSBORO, North Carolina — The second day of the Aggie Invitational ended with the Hawks suffering losses to North Carolina A&T and Howard. The Aggies defeated the Hawks 6-5, while the Bison beat the Hawks 17-4.
The first contest against North Carolina A&T was the conclusion of a suspended game from the previous day. Play resumed in the top of the fourth with the Aggies up 6-0 and Aggie pitcher Hailee Cutts in the midst of a perfect game. However, that inning saw the Hawks get their first hit and runs of the game. Senior Samantha Casarez hit a three-run home run following singles by juniors Kayla Trekell and Mackenzie Brown.
The Hawks scored two more runs in the 5th, but stranded two runners on base and that would be their last threat to score in the contest.
Juniors Daeshia Jones and Heidi Smith both went 1-3 in the game and scored a run apiece. The Hawks stole four bases in the contest and freshman Nasya Goodman pitched a complete game.
In the second game of the day, Howard scored eight runs in the top of the first inning with two outs to gain control from the outset.
Trekell, who went 1-3 and scored twice, was driven in by Casarez in the third inning to score the Hawks first run. By that time the Bison were ahead 14-0, due in large part to five Hawks errors during the game.
Junior Breana Florez finished the game 2-2 with two RBI’s and Jones scored a run in the contest. Trekell also pitched 4.1 innings in the game.
The Hawks will complete their play in the Aggie Invitational tomorrow (Feb. 18) with a game against the Cleveland State Vikings at 9:30 a.m. The Vikings defeated the Hawks 12-1 in the first game of the Aggie Invitational on Feb. 16.
