BUIES CREEK, N.C. – After opening the season winless, Coach Sam Douglas and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Softball team came away with a split on day two of the Campbell Invitational. The Shore blanked North Carolina Central (NCCU), 3-0, while falling in game two against Saint Francis (Pa.), 12-4.

In game one, the Hawks produced three runs on six hits. Sophomores Daeshia Jones (Teaneck, N.J.) and Sara Jo Whaley (Laurel, Del.) each tallied two hits while fellow classmate Kiana Peterson (Willingboro, N.J.) and junior Samantha Casarez (Sylmar, Calif.) launched balls into the seats.

Newcomer Sarah Maldonado (Long Beach, Calif.) broke the scoreless contest in the third on a throwing error by NCCU, 1-0.

Top five, Peterson homered to left center to increase The Shore’s lead, 2-0. Next inning, Casarez gave Eastern Shore more cushion with a solo shot down the leftfield line, 3-0.

Freshman Erin Hallman (Lakewood, Colo.) picked up her first career victory with a complete game shutout.

In game two, Casarez and senior Allison Anderson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) combined for all five Hawk hits. Casarez went a perfect 3-of-3 with a RBI while Anderson went 2-of-3 and crossed home twice in a losing effort.

In the first, SFU’s Madison Cabell drilled a two-run shot to put the Flash ahead, 2-0.

After three scoreless innings, Anderson put the Hawks on the board and sliced the margin in half, 2-1. Saint Francis responded with a big fourth inning, scoring four runs to extend their lead, 6-1.

Next inning, the Flash added two more runs to make the contest 8-1. Despite the deficit, Eastern Shore fought back and recorded three runs in the sixth, 7-4.

In the half bottom, SFU answered and ended the contest scoring four additional runs to win in six innings, 12-4.

On Feb. 24-25, The Shore (1-3) returns to action at the Willie Jewell’s Invitational Tournament, hosted by Charleston Southern.
